Reducing Health-Related Absences!

Occasional absences related to health reasons are to be expected. But absences can quickly add up. There are many ways districts and schools can help prevent unnecessary health-related absences.

Helping to keep students healthy is part of the solution. Districts and schools can provide students and their families with information and access to services, both in school and in the community, that can help children stay healthy throughout the year.

Share our Keep Your Child Healthy and in School! handout (also in Spanish) with families. Our Tips For Keeping Students Healthy has suggestions for districts, schools and community partners. Remind families that stomachaches and headaches might be a sign of anxiety. To learn more about the connection between chronic absence and anxiety, read our short Q&A with Pamela Cantor, M.D.

Communicate clearly about when families can send a child to school if they show signs of illness. Download and share our one page handout When is Sick Too Sick for School, or create your own that aligns with local health policy.

School nurses can help identify and address health-related and social barriers to school, support prevention and help with managing chronic conditions like asthma. Learn more by listening to Kimberly Stanislo from the National Association of School Nurses on our AAC webinar, Health, Well-being and Safety are Essential to Showing Up.

Teacher health and well-being are essential for creating the positive conditions for learning that can motivate students to show up. The Back-to-School tip sheet from Kaiser Permanente Thriving Schools suggests actionable steps to promote a supportive and healthy work environment throughout the school year for educators.

Attendance Tool Spotlight

To help schools develop a comprehensive plan to improve attendance and engagement, we’ve revised our Recommended Strategies for Schools. Attendance Works suggests four basic steps to address barriers and reduce chronic absence in schools. Check it out.

Understanding why students are absent as well as what motivates them to attend is key to creating a comprehensive multi-tiered system of support. We’ve updated our website page explaining how to find the root causes for absences, and just released a new Identifying Root Causes worksheet for school or district teams.

Tips from EveryDay Labs suggest how schools and districts can more simply communicate attendance policies. The blog post includes templates for elementary, middle and high schools.

Attendance Awareness Month!

In Maryland, Baltimore County Public Schools are celebrating Attendance Awareness Month and highlighting the importance of on time, regular school attendance by hosting countywide spirit days every Friday in September.

In South Carolina, District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties introduced “On Time Teddy” a mascot to encourage students to arrive on time each day.

State News

More students in Rhode Island attended school last year, reflecting a steady decline in the state’s chronic absence rate to 22.1%, according to the Rhode Island Department of Education. The state unveiled an interactive calendar heatmap showing daily attendance rates statewide for the past two years, filterable by district, school and student demographics. Rhode Island also released new guidance.

Alabama’s State Board of Education proclaimed September 2025 as Attendance Awareness Month, highlighting efforts to improve attendance, literacy and cross-agency efforts to leverage support services to address student barriers to showing up. View the resolution

Research Spotlight

Researchers analyzed surveys, conducted in 2022 and 2023, of families with chronically absent students, and found that health-related and social barriers were commonly reported reasons for chronic absence in an urban school district. The researchers say that these findings present a call to action for pediatricians and pediatric health systems to recognize the interrelatedness of school attendance and health.

Last year, the Overdeck Foundation awarded $1 million to support five new studies designed to generate actionable insights to boost attendance from pre-K through high school. In a blog post, Overdeck shares the emerging, early lessons that can help inform where schools and districts can focus their efforts.
