A Note from our President and CEO
Before the next school year begins, consider how you can build up the partnership between families and educators. Research shows that strong family engagement improves attendance. When families understand the impact of attendance on their children’s well-being, believe that sending their children to school will lead to a better future, and have faith that schools will support them, they are more likely to get their students to attend school.
I was delighted to join Beyond The Blog with The Patterson Foundation, where we discussed family engagement and what helps students show up to school. Listen here. Find more resources to help develop strong family relationships below.
Summer programs are a great way to motivate student learning and can lead to improved attendance and engagement. Share with families the American Camp Association’s Find a Camp tool. For strategies to develop a successful program, read Analysis: Summer Learning Is More Popular than Ever. How to Make Sure Your District’s Program Is Effective in The74.
This week we released a new analysis of 2024-25 school year chronic absence data available from 31 states. The short blog post, developed with the Everyone Graduates Center at Johns Hopkins University, focuses on chronic absence rates in U.S. schools. We found that most states still have more schools with either high or extreme levels of chronic absence than they did prior to the pandemic.
The blog post features bright spot stories from 2 schools in different regions showing educators using creative, tailored strategies to move the needle on student attendance
Thank you so much for your efforts this past year! As the school year wraps up, we hope that you find time for some fun and rest over the summer.
With best wishes,
Hedy N. Chang
