Attn: Teachers!

Do you know about the Cinema Arts Centre's Film Arts in Education program? Film Arts in Ed presents screenings for schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Traditionally, these ongoing community outreach activities have consisted of easily arranged and modestly priced field trips for junior and senior high school students and are an important part of our year-round exhibition program of outstanding American and international films.

Films can enliven and enrich your students’ educational experience in a variety of ways: as introductions to the language and culture of other countries, as opportunities to see and hear dramatizations of great literary works, and as explorations of past history or contemporary society. Designed for students in the International Languages, Literature, Social Studies, Film Studies, History, Music, Criminal Justice, and the Arts, our programs can also be used in conjunction with the interdisciplinary area studies and innovative curriculum projects popular in so many of our region’s schools.

Upcoming selections include:

THE ZONE OF INTEREST, an historical drama that portrays the idyllic life that the family of Nazi commandant Rudolf Hoss enjoyed in a sumptuous house right next to the concentration camp in Auschwitz right in the middle of the Holocaust.(Countries of origin: United States, United Kingdom, Poland; Languages: German, Polish, Yiddish)

THE TASTE OF THINGS, a French historical drama about an esteemed cook and the fine gourmet with whom she has been working for over the last 20 years. (Country of Origin: France, Belgium; Language: French)

If you are an educator and interested in setting up an Arts In Education screening for your class, please write to Matthew Roren at cacartsined@gmail.com. Please include your class subject and the day and time you are interested in booking a show.

The Cinema Arts Centre's Youth Advisory Board - Brining Young People Together to Enjoy Cinema

The Cinema Arts Centre is a vital "third place" on Long Island. It's a place where people from all backgrounds and all generations can go, feel at home, make community connections, engage in conversation, explore ideas and values, and enjoy time together. Making sure that the Cinema serves all generations with with programs that are meaningful and relevant to them is one of our most important activities. Following the tenet "nothing about us without us," the Cinema Arts Centre is proud to be engaged with our Youth Advisory Board - a group of cinema-lovers ages 15-25 who work together to plan and promote programs that they are excited about.

The Youth Advisory Board meets monthly, and works between in-person meetings to design film programs and cultural events that they market to their peers. The Youth Advisory Board has also taken the lead in organizing our annual 48 Hour Film Contest. To learn more about how to get involved, please contact ted@cinemaartscentre.org.

Our Campaign Closes on January 31!

Our annual appeal for program and operating funds - The Vic Skolnick Life of Our Cinema Campaign closes on January 31, and we are less than $8,000 away from achieving our goal!

First, thank you in a big way to everyone who has made a gift to this campaign! Our fundraising efforts have been more important than ever since we re-opened after our prolonged shutdown. Without your contributions, we simply would not be able to continue to deliver our programs and the community benefits that our programs bring.

Our goal for the current campaign is $200,000. We have until midnight on January 31st to make this goal. Considering our average campaign gift, that's about 5 donations a day through the end of the month. If you have not yet made a contribution to our campaign, can you help us reach our goal with a contribution of any amount?

We are so grateful for our major donors, but we want you to know, gifts of all sizes make a difference, This campaign has raised over $15,000 from gifts of $1 - $50. We've raised nearly $20,000 from gifts between $51 and $100. Every dollar counts, and we spend 80% of every dollar on direct program expenses.

Reaching our campaign goal helps us to continue to bring the broadest range of film and cultural events to our area, and to create community benefits that are artistic, cultural, social, and economic. The health of our Cinema and the health of our community are intertwined, which means your investment in the Cinema has returns for our whole community.

If you have already contributed to the success of this campaign, thank you again, If you have not yet made your annual fully tax-deductible gift, please consider a gift of any amount today.

THANK YOU.

OUR NEXT CONVERSATION with CROSSING PARTY LINES:

TUE, JAN 16 · 7:00 PM EST

Israel - Gaza: US Foreign Policy

RSVP at LINK: https://www.meetup.com/crossing-party-lines-ny-long-island/events/298024039/

The current Israel-Gaza conflict is part of a longstanding and complex geopolitical dispute centered on the territorial and political status of Israeli and Palestinian territories. The conflict was reignited on October 7th with Hamas, the group that controlled Gaza, launching rockets into Israel and entering Israeli territory taking hostages & murdering many, which sparked a massive response by the Israeli military from the air and on the ground.

The United States has historically been a close ally of Israel, providing political, military and economic support. Many in the US find themselves horrified by the acts of Hamas but are also disturbed about the number of civilian deaths taking place in Gaza. In this meeting we will be focusing on what the US policy should be in reaction to these events that will include:

  • Military Support to Israel - How much or how little is appropriate?
  • Humanitarian support to Gaza - Who receives it? How is it monitored?
  • Diplomatic efforts in the region, as well as efforts to influence other countries and international organizations - Should these be happening? In what direction?

Join the Crossing Party Lines discussion and have a voice in our nation’s conversation! People of all views are welcomed, appreciated, and heard.

Please plan to arrive at the beginning of the meetup for Meet & Greet before we sit down for conversation.
