TOSA Youth Tri Volunteers,

The triathlon is next Saturday, August 9th, from 8:00 am - noon. We have 200 athletes competing, and similar to last year, we’ll see several sets of siblings and twins, and members of Team Survivor (bone marrow recipients/cancer patients). We are so grateful for your help making this happen!

We are still looking for a few volunteers, mainly along the run and bike route. Please share our volunteer signup with anyone who may be able to help.

If this is your first time as a volunteer, you can come to the Grand Hall on Friday between 8am and 8pm to pick up your yellow volunteer shirt. You will also receive a $10 gift certificate to The Landing and TOSA Pool from your lead volunteer on race day.

Staging/Wave Information: The course and transition area are similar to last year. Once again, we are discouraging guardians from walking their athlete’s bike to transition.  If you have an athlete participating, bring their bike to the transition area before you report to your volunteer position. Let your lead volunteer know if you’d like to step out for a bit to watch their swim.

Parking: The parking lot at Hoyt Park will be reserved for athletes and the Parkway will be closed to traffic for the event. We ask that you park along the cross streets to the Parkway (90th, 91st or Hoyt Park Dr.) and walk or have someone drop you off.

Arrival Times: Please arrive by 7:30 AM to help set-up your area and meet with your lead volunteer. Lead volunteers, please come a little earlier to gather your supplies from the Grand Hall.

There will be snacks and drinks available in the Grand Hall for volunteers, but you may still want to bring a water bottle. If you’re positioned along the bike or running route, bring a folding chair if you’d like to sit down.

SAFETY PLAN: Everyone, please review the course map, FAQ’s and supplemental youth rules (last 3 pages of USAT rules) on our website HERE.

Please bring a fully charged cell phone. If an athlete is hurt, call 911 for any serious injury - that which requires transport, emergency lifesaving procedures or results in an athlete’s inability to care for him/herself during the incident. Examples of a serious injury would include head trauma, athlete vs. car or an asthma attack. Stay with the injured athlete until help arrives and alert your lead volunteer.

For minor injuries, escort the athlete to the closest aid station or lifeguard. Notify your lead volunteer of all injuries. The lead volunteer should report ALL injuries, no matter how minor, to the safety director, Clare O’Brien.

Our volunteers need to be ACTIVELY engaged. Watch and direct the athletes where to go and what to do next. Nobody should feel lost on the course! Reinforce the safety rules: don’t dive into the pool, bike on the right, pass on the left, etc.… Finally, be cheerful and encouraging. We want these kids to have fun!

Thank you for your help with this event. 2025 marks our 9th year for the triathlon and after this Saturday, nearly 1600 athletes will have run the course. We could not do this without you!
