Demonstrating Value Through Action

I know many of us are still coming to terms with the outcome of the 2024 election, myself included. Like many, I had so much hope, supported by a backbone of hard work, that we would be anxiously awaiting the inauguration of our first woman president. It seems however, the United States is not yet ready for this long overdue step in our country’s path of progress. And so, the culmination of all our efforts finds us contemplating how we’ll move forward fighting for the values we know to be right and true. Resistance is a word I’ve seen used to reference how we’ll move forward, and while I think it has an important place, I also think it’s only part of the puzzle. To resist is to push back, to hold off or stall. Surely, we’ll need to do this as we advocate for equitable policies, and the rights of our neighbors to stay in communities they want to be in, be who they are, and love who they love; basically, the right to pursue happiness.

A CHALLENGE FOR THE NEW YEAR

By Neva Parker, AADC Vice President for 2024

“A Democrat can’t win. Have you thought about running as something else?” I heard this during and after my campaign for the State Assembly. I always appreciate advice and in this instance it does seem logical. Placer and El Dorado Counties are uphill battles for Democrats, especially when the sentiment against us is so strong. If I want to win, maybe I should change.

But I did not run to be what people wanted me to be. I ran because I believed that who I was as a person, with my experience and my perspective – including my belief in the principles of the Democratic Party – could help my community.

CAMPUS WRAP-UP, 2024

By Leslie Moonshine, AADC Registration Team at Sierra College

While we had an exciting “election season” on campus, our time post-election has been sobering. We see and feel an emotional difference – from excitement and hope to grave uncertainty. But we will continue our voter outreach efforts in 2025, rallying students to whatever level of civic engagement feels right for them.

A Note about Our Surveys

Survey topics may seem repetitive, but the Tuesday and Wednesday groups often see and poll completely different students, as some classes are M-W-F and others are T-Th. As promised in last month’s newsletter, here are the belated results of our surveys from the week before Thanksgiving.
