“We cannot be mesmerized by the worst things that we see happening. We will be inclined to react with shock by some things which are done precisely with the intent to shock us. We need to move very quickly through the shock and condemnation into identifying what exactly has to be done. That requires a more tactical mentality.”

Message from our AADC President Bex Campbell

PASS THE MIC

As the president or leader of any club or organization, people get to hear from you regularly; it’s baked into the role. While I can appreciate this aspect of leadership, I also think part of my role is to provide a platform to others. I want to hear from different people about their thoughts and perspectives and about the cool stuff they're doing. So, I’m going to Pass the Mic from time to time, giving over my section of the newsletter to other folks. Enjoy!

Lighting Our Path: Bringing Hope to Our Democracy

By: Tomás Evangelista

It’s an honor to be the first on Pass the Mic and I’m excited for this series. Thank you Bex and the AADC for providing this space.

Auburn, CA, is my home, even though I currently reside in nearby Lincoln. I’ve shared my personal journey as a young undocumented immigrant growing up in this area not only to educate leaders but also to express my gratitude to the community that raised me and supported me when I needed it most.

Sierra College Students React to the New Reality

By: Leslie Moonshine

We all face a seismic political shift under the new administration. How are the Sierra College voters reacting? Well, our Voter Registration teams have seen a range of student reactions – some students are stoked for action, some express anguish, anger, sadness, and/or frustration, and some just choose to disengage. We meet students where they are and work to increase their civic engagement. And we try to bring a message of hope – that we all can do something to help in some way.

Robert Sherriff and Noelle Filice-Smith volunteer often to register students and to engage them in conversation about political issues. The AADC has built a welcome presence on the Sierra College campus.

Our Voter Registration Teams are dedicated and creative. Here is Leslie Moonshine, Gail Bartlow, and Sandy Floyd ready to greet students between classes and to engage them in conversation about current issues.

This Sierra College student is deeply engaged in conversation with Voter Registration Team members.
