FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Message from our AADC President Bex Campbell

The Path Ahead

I recently saw a post on social media that spoke about the need to build new systems as a strategy of effectively combating what is currently happening in the U.S., and I’d like to explore this idea. To build something requires us to create, which seems to me a fitting and natural response to the destruction we are witnessing. It can be hard to create in the wake of destruction though. Many of us find ourselves scared, outraged and longing for what once was. But as we all know, you can’t go back in time. And as we have all been learning, the systems that existed didn’t actually work for many Americans. It’s why some folks are ok with the destruction of those systems. So, what does the path ahead look like? Here are some of my thoughts.

Voter Registration Team Update

Students Respond Enthusiastically

To Questions about Current Issues

By: Leslie Moonshine

Our two Voter Registration Teams still visit Sierra College campus regularly, but our focus in this off-election year is less on registration and more on engagement. As a conversation starter, we use our signature surveys that focus on current events or actions of the Trump administration. Our ultimate goal is to get these young voters to the polls in 2026. The immediate goal, before voter registration, is to get students engaged in understanding what is at stake.

Our weekly conversations and connections with students are pivotal to the work AADC does at Sierra. We want to make sure these young voters stay tuned in to what is happening in the political sphere. We want them to have a firm understanding of how politics actually affects their lives. We want to help them stay engaged locally and nationally. And then, come election time, they will be fired up and ready to cast their vote!

TRAININGS AND EVENTS

AADC Membership Drive

April is Membership Month!

Bring a Friend😊

There’s something happening here. It’s clear that our country is in deep trouble, and we the people need to step up and save our democracy. We can’t wait for someone else to do something; we are the people we’ve been waiting for!

If you have friends who might be interested in the work that our Auburn Area Democratic Club (AADC) does, bring them to one of our monthly meetings or to a Coffee & Conversation event on Friday mornings from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

In addition, we are holding a special Membership Drive on Saturday, April 26 from 1 – 4 p.m. in our Auburn Headquarters: 161 Palm Ave., Suite 9.

Bring as many friends as you wish, and you will receive a raffle ticket for each person whom you bring! Raffle items include cool swag and a few surprises.

The bonus for joining AADC during April is that you automatically win 15 months of membership

for the price of 12 months!

In addition to refreshments and great conversation, you can register to vote or update your registration if you have moved or changed your political affiliation. Meet people who share your values. Brainstorm ways to make a difference in our community without wearing out your spirit. Have fun!

We are more powerful and can effect changes in our government if we work together. Everyone with a passion to preserve democracy is welcome! We need a variety of skills. Remember that you can join more than one Democratic Club😊

FUEL FOR THE FIGHT AHEAD

Because we're here to win!

“Activism works. So what I’m telling you to do now, is to act. Because no one is too small to make a difference.”

Take Care of Yourself!

Four reasons to keep a positive attitude during this difficult time:

  1. Trump’s approval rating is declining, and judicial decisions are going against him.
  2. Republicans are backing away from cuts to the safety net, such as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
  3. Support is high for Democrats in special elections.
  4.  Political parties that are out of power tend to do well in midterm elections.

Pace yourself in this marathon:

  1. Be politically active, devote some time per week to a cause. For example, see https://www.mobilize.us/
  2. Support small businesses in your area.
  3. Support journalism that focuses on the truth, like NPR and PBS, and is not afraid to criticize Trump and others.
  4. Take care of yourself and those close to you. Our actions on a day-to-day basis can make our lives and our country better.

A Thank You in This Troubled Time

This message was published by Robert Reich on March 23, 2025. It has been slightly edited for brevity. Robert Reich is a professor at UC Berkeley, and a former Secretary of Labor.

Friends,

It’s been another terrible week for America. Not only is the nation being severely tested, we as individuals are being tested as almost never before.

I know how hard it is to keep up your strength and determination in light of the daily onslaught from Trump, Musk, and their horrendous regime.

It’s devastating and depressing to witness their attempts to intimidate lawyers, law firms, universities, the media, and every other institution of civil society. I thank you for hanging in there, nonetheless — protecting those who are most vulnerable, appearing at political town halls and demanding that Republicans be held accountable, demanding that Democrats speak out, holding “empty chair” town halls when your representative doesn’t show up, jamming the White House switchboard, and making good trouble when and however you can.

It’s also critical in these perilous times to know that each of us is not alone — to feel the strength and conviction from being part of a community that cares deeply about social justice, democracy, and the rule of law.

And it’s important to speak out forcefully against Trump’s and Musk’s cruelty and injustices. Nor can we be intimidated into submission — as have Columbia University, big law firms like Paul Weiss, and most large corporations and their CEOs.

You are loudly and boldly proclaiming that what is happening is illegal and morally wrong, and your voice is more important now than ever before.

Finally, we need to learn from this tragedy and plan for a future free from the failures that have led America to where we are today.

Trump is the consequence — the culmination — of four decades during which America allowed inequalities to widen and political corruption to entrench itself. These must be reversed.

They will be reversed. We will not rest until Trump is gone and the inequalities and corruption that he exploited to get elected are overcome.

You and I are playing the long game. Thank you for your activism. Thank you for your courage. Thank you for keeping the flame alive.

Because of you, we will prevail.
