Auburn Courts resident, Merlyn Kinkel, was named Teacher of the Year
Merlyn shows off his Minnesota Teacher of the Year Award from 1977.
Merlyn grew up in Pine River, MN and was selected to the Varsity High School basketball team when he was just in the 6th grade! The first student to ever achieve a varsity spot as a 6th grader, Merlyn took that love for the game and turned it into a career along with being a teacher. He got his first teaching job in 1955 in New York Mills, MN. He taught 7 classes there as well as being head basketball, baseball and assistant football coach. He jokes about the fact he only made, "$3,000 a year!"
In 1958, Merlyn, along with his wife, Pat, moved to Chaska, MN where he started teaching at Chaska High School as a Biology and General Science teacher; he continued to coach both basketball and football.
After 22 years of teaching, Merlyn was nominated by the Carver County school district as Minnesota Teacher of the Year in 1977; he won and went on to win this prestigious honor two more times during his teaching career. He retired from teaching in 1994. Merlyn fondly looks back on his students and said that, "His personality fit well with them and that he loved those kids".
A fun fact about Mr. Kinkel is that he was the teacher for many of our current staff members here at Auburn Homes as well as the children of a few of our residents.

Just call Billy, a Waconia Home resident,
the "Music Man"
Billy's band, "The Lot", circa 1970's; Billy is on the bottom row, far right.
Billy started playing guitar and singing in college. He left college and moved to the Duluth/Superior area where he was in a band called “The Collectors.” He also had a job at the steel plant where he worked nights and played with his band on the weekends. There was another band looking for a drummer and they asked the drummer in Billy’s band to join.
The drummer said not without Bill. Billy moved to Minneapolis and started with the band fulltime. “The Lot,” played 6 nights a week and was on the road traveling for 5 years. After the band broke up, Billy went back to Minneapolis where he was a booking agent for 40 years booking bands for night clubs and other events.

The Music Man, Billy, today.

Do you know a "Shining Star"
at Auburn Homes?
Is there a staff member at Auburn Homes & Services who has gone the "extra mile" to provide outstanding care to your loved one? Someone you can always count on to empower our residents to live with purpose and passion? If so, we encourage you to recognize them as a "Shining Star". Our Shining Star program gives you the opportunity to pay tribute to a special staff member here at Auburn Homes as well as make a donation to our Foundation on their behalf. The employee will be awarded a star pin that they can proudly wear on their badge and know that their care has made a difference in one of our resident's life. Your donation of any denomination will go to furthering our Life Enhancement activities for our residents. To learn more or make a donation, please click here.
