Montville police: Woman dies from gunshot wound to the head after shocking Medina County standoff
|
MONTVILLE TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WOIO) - Police in Medina County provided new details to a sexual assault attempt and SWAT standoff that turned deadly early Sunday morning.
The investigation started just after midnight Sunday morning when an unclothed 17-year-old girl approached an employee in a McDonald's parking lot on Wooster Pike.
The teen girl told the employee that a man, identified as Shawn Guillereault, shot 44-year
-old Rachel Azbell and then attempted to sexually assault the teenager before she was able to escape from a Stockbridge Drive home.
Montville Police announced Azbell died from her injuries on Monday afternoon.
Officers responded to the home at approximately 1 a.m. based off of the girl's claims.
At around the same time, Guillereault called 911 to report that he shot his girlfriend, later identified as Azbell, in the head. Police were also informed that there were two more juveniles inside the home.
"It was a disagreement. It got out of control,"
Guillereault told the dispatcher when asked why he shot Azbell.
The first officers on the scene approached Guillereault in the garage, where he was actually applying pressure to Azbell's gunshot wound.

Medina resident who collapsed during marathon 'was healthy and active'
|
MEDINA - Taylor Ceepo was a high-level athlete who didn't tackle new adventures without being properly prepared.
So those who knew her were shocked when they heard she collapsed within a mile of the finish line during the 42nd annual Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon on Sunday. The 22-year-old Medina woman was pronounced dead at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center.
Ceepo graduated from Walsh University this spring where she starred on the women's soccer team. After her soccer career was over, she started running, something her mother and younger sister already did.
Her former club director with the Internationals, a top-ranked club soccer team based out of Pinnacle Sports in Granger Township, said Ceepo prepared for Sunday's 13.1-mile course, which was her first half-marathon.
"She was healthy and active," Keri Sarver said Monday. "This is something she trained for. As far as I know, she had no signs or symptoms. It was a complete shock."
Sarver isn't sure if the hot and humid day contributed to Ceepo's death.
"I don't want to speculate," she said.
Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas Gilson said in a statement Monday that a preliminary investigation did not determine a definitive cause of death.

Steps of Change highlights resources to addicts and their families
MEDINA - About 15 service organizations that help those wrestling with alcohol and drug addiction were brought together Saturday at the Kenneth Dukes Stadium on Union Street.
The purpose of the gathering, called Steps of Change, was to make the public aware of the help that's out there for addicts wanting to recover, said Jess Hazeltine, Medina County coordinator for OhioCAN, which with the Recovery Center of Medina County organized the event.
"Unfortunately, people don't realize all the resources available," Hazeltine said. "All the organizations here work together to provide a safety net for people struggling with addiction, so it's nice to have them all in one place."
Organizations setting up tents at Steps of Change included Medina County Job and Family Services; Hope and Healing, a battered-women's shelter and rape crisis center serving Medina and Summit counties; the Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities; the Medina County Health Department; and Spokes Cafe, an outreach of Peaceworks, a nonprofit that provides employment opportunities for the developmentally disabled.
Also at Steps of Change were Hope Recovery Center, which is just starting to establish a location in Medina; OhioGuidestone, a counseling and treatment center for young people; and Bellefaire JCB, which provides behavioral health and substance abuse services.
