Audubon School, Top 100 Highest Achieving School, CPS Level 1+ Rating

Audubon Newsletter: 2015-2016, Volume 13
Message from Assistant Principal Amy Durkalski

Dear parents and community members,

As I sit in my very quiet office, I swear I can still hear the pittering of little feet and the pattering of big feet up and down the hallway!  Today was challenging, not having my teachers and students in the building, but it just makes me even more hopeful for Monday and how exciting it will be to begin the next chapter of Audubon's story.

On Monday we will welcome Ms. Duffy.  Please keep an eye out for an introductory letter/email coming to your inboxes this weekend.

Highlights in this newsletter:
  • We need yearbook pics!
  • A ton of new Audubon and community events
  • Sign-up for Quarter 4 after school programs, deadline is Monday, April 4th
  • Over ten different spring break and summer camp options
Audubonly yours,
Ms. Durkalski

DON'T MISS THIS! Parent Night with Detective Charles Hollendoner: May 4th, 6:30pm

This is a don't miss-can't miss event!  Detective Charles Hollendoner of the Chicago Police Department's special victims department speaks to Audubon parents!

For the last four years, Det. Hollendoner has educated Audubon parents on everything a parent should know about internet safety, social media smarts for parents, and the consequences of cyberbullying.

Each year, he has new information on new programs, apps, games, etc that YOUR CHILD is using every day to communicate and share information.

Parents will meet with Det. Hollendoner on Wednesday night, May 4th.  Students will then have an assembly with him the following day.  This way parents are prepared to answer any questions your child may come home with and ask you.

There will be two assemblies.  One for 4th and 5th grade students that will focus primarily on internet safety and how to use social media appropriately.  The 6th-8th grade students will review internet safety but will focus on cyberbullying and proper use of social media.

The only way to know what your children are up to on social media is to hear it from the guy who has 14 instagram accounts, 8 facebook profiles, and arrests and prosecutes people every day for being unsafe or inappropriate on the internet.

Student Enrichment Opportunities

Roscoe Village has a kids coding school!
Computers
If your kids can't get enough of their technology classes with Ms. Bowens, it may be time to extend that passion with after school coding classes.

Power Up Tech Academy is a locally owned business that offers kids coding classes for grades K through 8th. It is located at 2867 N Clybourn Ave, just north of Diversey.

Classes allow kids to:
  • Make their own video games,
  • Use computer programming to create art and music,
  • Develop custom Minecraft plug-ins
  • ...and more!
The groups are small so that each child can choose projects that they are excited about, and get individualized coaching and help along the way. This also allows students to move ahead quickly and take on new challenges if they are understanding things rapidly.

Coding is an awesome creative outlet and develops an understanding of 21st century skills and career paths. Plus, kids gain confidence when they are able to show games and animations that they made themselves. Maybe your child will create the next Minecraft!

For more information about Power Up Tech Academy, call (773) 382-0778 or visit the  website .

Writing a student absence note is easy as 1-2-3!

When your child is absent, we ask that all absences are documented.  There are three easy ways to report an absence:
  1. Go to the Audubon website, click on the "Parents" tab, then click on "Absences."  You will find an electronic absence note that you can fill out that goes directly to our office staff.
  2. Stop by the main office and ask Ms. Glascott or Ms. Perez for a "Reason for Absence" form.  You can fill it out right there.
  3. You may write a note with the reason for your child's absence and put it in your child's folder to bring to school. As long as the child remembers to give the note to their teacher, that note will make its way down to the office.
We highly encourage parents to take advantage of option one, as it's so easy and is electronically saved for documentation purposes.

If your child has been sick for more than three days, we require a doctor's note along with the absence form that you fill out.

As a reminder, absences that are considered excused are:
  1. Student illness
  2. Death in the family
  3. Family emergency
  4. Observance of a religious holiday
*Please note that you do not need to call the school office to report your child's absence.  The electronic or paper absence form is sufficient.  We do ask that you fill these forms out as soon as possible.
