*Music Note: Continuing the celebration of the great Belgian composer César Franck's 200th birth anniversary, the Organist will offer two more works of his before and after Mass: first, a student work, only recently-published, and then, following Mass, also in a brand-new edition, the original version of the work with which was dedicated the organ at St. Clotilde in Paris in 1859. They are longer works than are usually heard at Mass ... but enjoy! DW

I blame Diocesan Convention for my reception into the Episcopal Church. Or, I would if I were pointing fingers. Perhaps I should say, instead, I’m thankful for my first experience of Diocesan Convention nearly a decade ago because it showed me something extraordinary and powerful: the church at work. Near the end of my studies of systematic theology I had begun to focus on ecclesiology, the way the church understands itself in the world and how it ought to govern itself to best reflect its nature. There are, of course, a plurality of ecclesiologies.
The church I grew up in governs itself in a way that, while it sometimes appeals to the sensus fidei, the sense of the faithful, situates decision-making at the “top,” with the bishops. This is often modeled at the parish level, as well.
In my studies, I found myself longing for a chance to put meat on the bones of an ecclesiology that takes seriously the active participation of all who count themselves members of the church. I wanted to be a part of a church where members could take seriously their baptismal call to engage with the big questions of faith and how we are to be church in the world as well as engage in the mundane work of maintaining community.
I had started attending an Episcopal Church with the intention of remaining a Roman Catholic. Then the rector sent me to Diocesan Convention, and I knew my life was changed. I knew that this is the institution where my faith could flourish and I could finally participate in the way I knew I was called.
I’m an outlier among my colleagues, but I love Convention. I love that we intentionally gather and make decisions together as a church each year, regardless of our ordination status. Ascension gets to send three lay delegates to Convention every year. I am hopeful that there are those among our congregation who would like to participate and represent our parish this November as we gather again online this year. Consider this my personal invitation to reach out to me or to Fr. Heard if you’d like to know more about participating in this very important gathering. Who knows? It may change your life, too.

Requiescat in pace
Ascension parishioner Theodore (Ted) Dudley Saunders, Jr. died on Sunday, July 24, 2022, at the age of 87.
There will be a visitation in the narthex of Church of the Ascension on Saturday, August 6th at 10 a.m. followed by a Requiem Mass at 11 a.m. A brief reception will follow. The Requiem Mass will be live-streamed. Ted's interment will be on Saturday, September 3 at Holy Sepulcher Catholic Cemetery & Mausoleum, Alsip, IL. Please join in praying for the repose of his soul and for all who knew and cared for him, especially his wife LaVerne.
O God, who by the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ destroyed death, and brought life and immortality to light: Grant that your servant Ted, being raised with him, may know the strength of his presence, and rejoice in his eternal glory; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (BCP, p. 493)
Rest eternal grant unto him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him;
May his soul and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Acolyte Retreat
All who serve as acolytes in our parish are invited and encouraged to gather after worship on Sunday, August 7 at 1:00 PM for an acolyte retreat and workshop. Lunch will be served! We hope this will be an opportunity to recognize your service, clarify liturgical questions or notes, and enjoy a bit of fellowship together. We'll also have a chance to talk with Fr. Heard, find out how we can best assist him, and discuss ideas that may make it easier for us all to serve together. Please mark your calendars and RSVP by clicking here to reserve a meal and share your questions with us ahead of time.

Food Pantry Moved to August 13
We will again gather to assemble bags of shelf-stable groceries and personal items for our neighbors in need, but we will meet on the second Saturday of the month in August rather than the first. Please note this change. We begin filling bags in St. Michael Hall at 9:30 am and start distributing them at 11 a.m. We need the most help between 9:30 and 11 am, but welcome your help for however long you are able to stay.
Come be the hands, heart, and feet of Christ in our own neighborhood and enjoy some fellowship as well.

Search for the Next Rector
The Rector Search Committee is currently examining the information gathered from the Small Group Meetings. This information along with the information obtained from the CAT survey will be used to create the Parish Profile. It will then be placed on the Ascension website. Prospective candidates can learn about us by consulting the profile.
Thank you to all parishioners who shared their thoughts at a Small Group Meeting and thank you to facilitators and notetakers.

Do you have a need for special prayer in your life? Whether your prayer needs are because you have an upcoming surgery, an ill family member, or you’re just feeling particularly lonely lately, Fr. Heard and Mtr. Murphy-Gill would like to know.
We’ve created a way for letting us know about your requests for prayers in a way we hope makes it easy for you to reach out, though you can always call the church or reach out to one of the priests personally.
