Message from President
Billie Araiza
|
Greetings!
I would like to start by thanking Patricia Cockcroft for providing such a wonderful “Happy Hour” on Thursday. It was so wonderful to hear her share past Soroptimist experiences and even some pretty amazing personal stories. What an honor it is to have her as an “Honorary” member in our club.
While we are on the topic of “Honors”, I am grateful to have the opportunity to share some fabulous news with all of you. SI Chico was recognized at the SIA 46th Biennial Convention. Our club received “Honorable Mention” under the Membership Category for the Soroptimist Celebrating Success Award. SI Chico was also recognized for achieving “Diamond Champaign” at the SIA Level. Clubs had to meet the criteria two years in a row to be recognized at this level. What an honor it is to be a member of such a wonderful organization.
I would like to bestow the honorary title of “Parlimentarian” to one of our club members. Our first Board meeting is August 17, 2020, and we are still in need of a parliamentarian. Carolyn has offered to do some training with anyone who is interested in learning this position. If you are interested in serving as our parliamentarian this year, please reach out to me.
Our next backyard coffee is at 9 am, this Wednesday, at Jeanne’s. Bring your morning beverage and join us for some socializing, while Social Distancing, Soroptimist style. Social distancing brings me to our next topic, our SI Chico B-B-Q, and Installation. We are continuing to monitor the ever-changing rules and regulations of COVID-19. Our Sierra Nevada Region Governor, Sarah Carrasco, has offered to attend our Installation and swear in our incoming officers. It would truly be an honor to have Governor Sarah attend our Installation. She is aware that the COVID-19 Rules and Regulations are constantly changing and she is willing to work with us.
It’s a great time to be a Soroptimist and I am honored to serve as your President!
With gratitude,
President Billie

Virtual Soroptimist Development Retreat (SDR)
|
|
A great group has worked on the virtual program.
The first item will be a welcome from myself and right underneath is the program, identifying the workshop, the presenter and the link to the PowerPoint, video or Zoom meeting.
I want to let you know that some of the presentations require that you download the PowerPoint and because they are lengthy, it may take 3 to 4 minutes to download. Please be patient, it is well worth it. The content of the presentations are remarkable.
Special instruction: if you have Microsoft Office, download the PowerPoint and open it, hit F5 to start the slides. If you do not have Microsoft Office, download the PDF version to view the slides.
Any handouts will be right underneath the presentation. The last item will be an evaluation form. We encourage your feedback because if we need to do future virtual formats we want to do better than what we have done here.
One of the highlights of SDR, is the opportunity for the District Directors (DD) to have a conversation with their club leaders and those members who are willing to step up to leadership roles in the future. The dates and times and links to the Zoom meeting for each District Director is on the program right beneath my welcome to all.
I am depending on all of you to nudge your fellow members to take the time to participate in the virtual SDR. This event is open to all who have a computer, cell phone or iPad. JOIN THE FUN.
Enjoy the efforts of the Region Leadership, they did a fantastic job under the leadership of SDR Coordinator Maureen Mason.
Stay safe, be engaged with the Region, and share this information with others.
Governor Sarah
PS: Please note that the E-blast that goes out on 8/1 will be delayed until 8/3

We still have 3 meeting dates available for guest speakers. If you have an idea to suggest, please run it by Pres. Billie first, if she agrees, let me know so we can reserve a date on our meeting calendar.
Dates still available are: Oct. 21, Dec. 9 and Dec. 16
At this time I am uncertain as to our protocol. Our meeting may remain via Zoom. Please be aware of that when discussing details with potential speakers.

Summer Socializing with SI Chico
Hello Soropti-sisters!
We are going to shake up our usual practice of summertime drop-in lunches in light of COVID-19 and hope that we can still socialize through the months of July and August comfortably. As you may know, we usually alternate through the list of member owned restaurants each Wednesday at noon through the summer, allowing members who are inclined and available to meet up with others and enjoy lunch while supporting our member's businesses. With social distancing and varying levels of comfort with dine-in, we decided to change this plan for summer 2020.
We will alternate take-out lunches and meeting at local parks with backyard morning coffee gatherings. (Summer schedule below)
See you all this summer
SI Objectives
|
|
 |
Backyard morning coffee: Some of our members have offered their backyards for these (socially distanced) morning gatherings. Please plan to bring your own coffee (or other beverage) and a chair. Enter directly to each member's backyard. It will be great to hang out together. (9:00 a.m.)
July 1 – Coffee @ 9:00, Bonnie Chapman’s backyard
July 15 – Coffee @ 9:00, Carol Burr’s backyard
August 5 – Coffee @ 9:00, Jeanne Smith’s backyard
August 19 – Coffee @9:00 Carrie Pavis’s backyard
|
|
 |
 |
Take-out lunches: Our schedule will list the "suggested" take-out restaurant for each of these and then designate a shade covered picnic area in one of our parks for the lunchtime meet-up. Brown bagging is always an option. (noon)
July 8 – La Comida – Pick up lunch and eat at Wildwood Park
July 22 - Spiteri - Pick up lunch and eat at Wildwood Park**
July 29 – SOL – Pick up lunch and eat at DeGarmo Park
August 12 – Cozy Diner – Pick up lunch and eat at Wildwood Park**
August 26 – La Hacienda – Pick up lunch and eat at DeGarmo Park
**Note: At Wildwood Park we will meet on the South side of the park in the grass under the shade trees, away from the pavilion & playground equipment - bring your own chair.
