It's Not Too Late to Register for Entrepreneur Training:
We are partnering with the Small Business Development Center of Wisconsin, SBDC (UW-Superior), to host a local Entrepreneur Training Program at Hayward Area Memorial Center and Water’s Edge beginning TODAY, September 24 th from 6:00-8:30 pm. This will be an 8-week program meeting on Thursdays which will include a panel of local entrepreneurs. For more information or to register: https://wisconsinsbdc.org/superior/attend/etp

August/September Busy as Ever-

  • Workforce Housing in Sawyer County remains a pressing topic. SCLCOEDC has been working with stakeholders across Sawyer County to address the shortages and bring development to our county. To participate or find out more: info@sclcoedc.com

  • Finance 101 was held at Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College recently. We hope to bring more of these classes to our county in the near future. If you would be interested in attending or hosting this type of training please let us know: info@sclcoedc.com

  • SCLCOEDC is establishing partnerships to bring a Workforce Training Program to our inmate population in Sawyer County. More to come!

  • PLACEMAKING: Our draft report, with all the input our teams provided during the May and July meetings, has arrived and is being finalized. As soon as it is available, it will be posted to our website at: http://sclcoedc.com/news-events/placemaking/ The progress continues. There is currently a focus on signage development. Keep an eye out for updates in October!

  • Downtown Hayward Business Improvement District: Member property owners got together Sept. 11 for a "crawl" where members visited downtown businesses and got to know each other. The report was, "Lots of excitement and great ideas were shared throughout this event." If you missed it, don't worry. Planning is underway for another crawl event in October or early November. To Ann Kozak: The Board of Directors would like to th ank Ann Kozak for h er work as our part-time director over the last months. Ann's energy and enthusiasm was a wonderful asset as she engaged many businesses and initiatives for SCLCOEDC. Ann has returned to her focus at Hayward Memorial Hospital and Water's Edge as their Community Services Coordinator and we wish her well.

Ann wished to leave a parting message to you all:

Economic Development is a passion of mine. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to do what I love! 

As my contract comes to an end, I wanted to let you know how much I have appreciated getting to know the dedicated business owners, board members, agencies and citizens who strive to make Sawyer County a great place to make a home and a living. I hope the work I have done over the past six months has left the businesses and communities in a better position to excel.

To Heather Sheehan: SCLCOEDC would also like to thank Heather Sheehan as she departs from our Board of Directors where she most recently served as our Vice President and member of our Executive Committee. While with the SCLCOEDC, Heather contributed countless hours to several committees, projects and initiatives including marketing, fundraising, placemaking and the list goes on. We wish Heather well, and again - a huge Thank You for helping us Promote a Thriving Sawyer County!

Jim Anderson
Jump River Electric

Our Board of Directors includes volunteers who know how to bring resources and people together to accomplish a goal. Someone who is no stranger to knowing the ins and outs of navigating his team through those complexities is Jim Anderson - Our Board Member Spotlight of the week:
Jim relocated to Wisconsin when he joined Jump River Electric Cooperative as their General Manager. Previously, he was with Tanner Electric Cooperative in North Bend, Washington where he was the Manager of Operations and Engineering. Jim has also worked for electric cooperatives in Montana and Oregon. Before joining the cooperative family he worked for investor owned utility companies in Oregon.
Jim has worked in generation, transmission, distribution and substation construction and maintenance, as well as metering. He holds Journeyman classifications as a Lineman, Substation Wireman, and is also a Meter/Relay Technician. He has helped implement new technologies and ideas in the electric utility industry for the improvement of power quality and system reliability.
Jim’s education is in business management and he has continued his education and training in all phases of utility operations and management. He is a member of IEEE, as well as other professional associations.
Jim and his wife have family in Wisconsin and Minnesota; they are active members in the community.
Jump River Electric Cooperative (JREC) is a member-owned utility cooperative headquartered in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. The local cooperative has been in business for 78 years and serves members in parts of six counties, including Barron, Chippewa, Price, Rusk, Sawyer and Taylor.
