Foundation Holds Second Council Reunion

The Foundation hosted it's second Iowa State 4-H Council Reunion for all council members. State Council alum interacted with the Foundation's Executive Director, Kris Fish Kuhlmann, and current State Council members. 2013-2014 members discussed what the council has been doing this year and new things the council is excited to get involved with. Past members were able to reconnect and talk about shared experiences in the 4-H Exhibis Building at the Iowa State Fair.

A New 4-H Year
As the summer comes to an exciting end, our staff has taken the time to reflect the past month's events. At the beginning of the summer we welcomed a recent graduate of UNI, Brooke Young, to our team and we also welcomed a new intern, Iowa State student Carter Collins. They have hit the ground running since they arrived to our office. The 2013 scholarship event was their test of their 4-H spirit and they did not disappoint. The event went on without a hitch at its new location, the 4-H Youth Extension Building on the campus of Iowa State University.

Our team continued through the summer planning our three "Going for the Green" Iowa 4-H Golf Benefits. I was inspired by  people like Aaron Thomas and Iowa Soybean Association's Lindsay Greiner who spoke of their belief in the 4-H program here in Iowa.

The State Fair was also full of continued inspiration. Current 4-H'ers
amazed me on the projects they created, the Working Exhibits they presented, the robots they create on the spot, and the talent they shared at Share The Fun. The dedicated volunteers like Shirley Stakey, and current and past Board of Trustees who would take time to share a momentous moment with our newest class of honorees at the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame Event.

The 4-H core values are alive and well in Iowa and the summer may bring out the best of all 4-H'ers, but I know that more
great, inspiring 4-H stories are yet to come. We  look forward to the new 4-H year and the many events on the horizon that will allow 4-H'ers, 4-H alumni and our dedicated volunteers and donors to share their time, talents and treasure to "make the best better."                -Kris Fish Kuhlmann
$110,000 raised during "Going for the Green" Golf Benefits
The final "Going for the Green" Golf Benefit was held Friday, August 23 at  the 7,400 yard golf course Blue Top Ridge at Riverside. The Eastern
Iowa Golf Benefit was a swinging
success, raising over $11,000 for Iowa 4-H youth with 17 golf teams. Teams from our tournament sponsors West Liberty Foods and the Iowa Soybean Association kept the 4-H fun event competitive for first place. The Foundation thanks both of them for their generous support on the hot August day.

Iowa Soybean Association, the presenting sponsor for all three golf events this year, made sure all of our golfers took in the beauty of our golf courses in Northwest Iowa, Central Iowa, and Eastern Iowa.  Photos of the teams from all of our golf events this summer we can be found on our Facebook page.

Sponsorship for next year is still available;  if your company is interested in supporting Iowa 4-H'ers through our golf benefits, please contact Albert Grunenwald at 515.294.4780 or abgrunen@iastate.edu.

Northeast Takes Home $1,600 Jackpot
With the 2013 Iowa State Fair officially concluded, the Foundation is ready and excited to report the results of its most recent effort to raise funds for Iowa 4-H'ers.

During the Foundation's  five day stint from August 8-12 to facilitate the first ever Iowa State Fair Coin Wars competition, the Northeast 4-H Area took home the $1,655 jackpot. Counties within the winning Northeast area with established county endowment funds have received $110 in their county endowment accounts.

"It was amazing to hear everyone's 4-H stories from across the state and around the midwest who walked into the 4-H Building," said the Iowa 4-H Foundation Intern, Carter Collins. "It was as astounding as the 4-H'ers who would drop bags of their spare change."

110 Honorees inducted at 2013 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame
Eighty-three counties inducted honorees into the 2013 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, August 18. The honorees were selected by their counties for their outstanding service and dedication to 4-H.

Inductees or their surviving family members were presented a certificate  by the Iowa 4-H Foundation as they were introduced on stage. In alphabetical order, Adair to Jackson Counties were recognized at 1:30 PM, while Jefferson to Wright County were recognized at 3:30 PM.  A reception was held shortly after each of the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame presentations.

You can find photos of all the inductees on our Facebook Page and find complete bios on our website. Our website also allows you to search by county or by year to see honorees since the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame began in 2002.
