The Slip is Lucas Schaefer's novel about a missing teenage boy, mistaken identity, and the transformative power of boxing.
From Lucas Schaefer: “Tables of Contents, an organization that pairs author readings with dishes referenced in the author's work, held an event for The Slip. They offered fruit salad served in watermelons carved to look like sharks' heads, mentioned in the 'Memory Care' chapter of the novel. which also references various foods served at a wake: deviled eggs, lemon bars, and miniature deli sandwiches. If a book club is feeling especially adventurous, some of those sandwiches include tongue. Uncle Bob, meanwhile, enjoys ‘pimento-stuffed olives and sun-dried tomatoes and any other item that made its home in thick oils or briny juices’. Alexis Cepeda's aunt Lola's famous ceviche is also referenced, as is Alexis's favorite food: chicken wings in the ‘Baker's Gold’ sauce offered at Pluckers Wing Bar. Finally, Whataburger is a central location of The Slip. A particularly hungry book club might want to replicate that restaurant's A1 Thick & Hearty Burger—two beef patties, three slices of bacon, American cheese, and onions topped with A1 Thick and Hearty sauce.”
