COVID 19- Guidelines

As the pandemic continues to evolve so do the management and expectations for 4-H programming. As of March, 4-H does not require masks for local indoor or outdoor 4-H activities. We are monitoring illness metric, public health guidance, and UC policies regularly so we can revise guidelines as necessary . We encourage you to keep safety as your top priority and implement preventative measures. Thank you for your patience and attention to the ongoing COVID management and adjustments to 4-H

In the Spotlight!

Pat Karinen, Shooting Sports Club Leader shared this about Jack: Jack is a very calm and he leads by example for other 4Hers in the club and other youth he deals with. His ability with a shotgun is very impressive- the best I have seen in my 29 years as a volunteer with Shooting Sports.

Jack's impressive achievements and competency with a shotgun, led him to   compete at Nationals Nebraska this summer!

Congratulations to JACK DUFFIN for being in the Marin County 4-H Spotlight!

Name: Jack Duffin

Club: Marin Shooting Sports

Project(s): Trap Shooting

Years in 4-H: 5 (I think?)

What I am most excited about in competing in the National Championship: This has been a long term goal for me and now that it is here I am just really excited to be going. I have never been to Nebraska so traveling to a new place will be fun. Most of the competitions I shoot at have 100-150 shooters and at Nationals I think there will be double that. I am excited for the competition. California has never won a medal at a national championship in shooting sports so I would really like to be the first and bring back some awards for my club and state.

What I feel most proud of as a 4-Her: I am proud of the community around 4-H, especially the community around Marin Shooting Sports. All of the leaders and 4-H members are very supportive of each other. I have enjoyed mentoring new shooters and helping others find a love for shooting sports.

A leader I would like to recognize/appreciate: I would like to give a shout out to Pat Karinen, my leader, for believing in me. From very early on Pat said to me "when you are older I am going to take you to 4H nationals". Pat has always believed in my abilities and encouraged me. Pat has taught me so much.

What I love about 4-H: I love the opportunities 4-H brings. Being part of 4-H has opened many doors for me. As I enter my Senior year of high school I am excited to see what opportunities come my way. During the trip to Nationals, my Dad and I are going to meet with a coach from a local college to talk about going to school there to shoot!

One thing I have learned in 4-H: Always do your best. Whether you win or lose, do so with a smile.

Favorite song/artist or quote: Burn by Juice WRLD

STEM

Explorers of the Deep

Explorers of the Deep, focuses on the mysteries and adventures of ocean exploration—with robots! Young people learn how to use science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to explore Earth’s Ocean and how it relates to all life on the planet.Explorers of the Deep activities can be done all at once or individually.

1. Ocean Robot Test Tank is an activity where youth learn how to “ballast” their ocean robot by adding weights to replicate the sinking and floating behavior of a real ocean robot. They will investigate data collected by ocean robots and learn about the value of ocean exploration.

2. Ocean Expedition is a board game where youth navigate their ocean robot around the world while learning key ocean concepts. Topics include aquaculture, climate change, innovation, human impact and the ocean ecosystem.

3. Ocean Communicator is an activity in which young people investigate challenges that ocean scientists, engineers and technologists are currently exploring. They design and advocate for innovations and technical solutions that inspire public action.

Livestock Judging

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)

Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining"!

4-H Policy Reminder: Youth Protection Interaction with 4-H Members During 4-H Activities

When planning 4-H events and activities, the expectation is always that a minimum of 2 approved 4-H Adult Volunteers will be present.

Only in the event that an appointed 4-H Adult Volunteer has had an urgent matter, and it then becomes impractical or impossible for a minimum of 2 appointed adult volunteers to be present for the 4-H event or activity, would staff then coordinate and designate another adult at least 21 years old to participate. Use of a non-appointed adult to fulfill these roles is to be done as a last resort, not the standard approach for staff when planning 4-H events and activities.

Avian Flu

Poultry owners urged to protet birds from Avian Influenza virus

The current avian influenza outbreak, which has killed wild birds and domestic birds in at least 29 states across the U.S., is already considered the worst bird flu outbreak since 2015“When it comes to protecting your flock, there is no treatment for HPAI so the best thing you can do is focus on biosecurity,” said Maurice Pitesky, UC Cooperative Extension poultry specialist in the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis. Learn more and get updates.
