Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano Celebrates 50 Years!

This year the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano County celebrates 50 years of providing nutritious food to families in need. They marked this significant milestone with an Open House Celebration. Supervisor Andersen attended and presented Caitlin Sly, President and CEO, with a County Proclamation honoring their years of service. Founded in 1973, the Food Bank has grown from a small volunteer-run operation to one of the largest food assistance networks in Northern California, now serving over 270,000 individuals annually.

Over the past five decades, the Food Bank has built strong partnerships with local communities, businesses, and volunteers, ensuring that thousands of families in Contra Costa and Solano counties have access to healthy food options. Whether it’s fresh produce, dairy, or pantry staples, the organization remains committed to fighting hunger and building a healthier, more resilient community.

Food Rescue App by White Pony Express Streamlines Food Donations

White Pony Express, a nonprofit food recovery organization, has streamlined the process of connecting food donors with a network of volunteer food-runners through its Food Rescue Hero Initiative, funded by the County’s Measure X Innovation Fund. The White Pony Express Food Rescue App works like rideshare for free food distribution. Food donors like restaurants, caterers, schools, and cafeterias can use the app to signal when they have excess food. Available volunteers are notified via the app when a run is available and can claim the run to pick up and deliver the food to a recipient organization.

According to Feeding America, Contra Costa County has a population of over 107,000 people, as of 2022, who experience food insecurity. Additionally, it is estimated 30-40% of the U.S. food supply is wasted, according to the California Department of Food and Agriculture. White Pony Express’s creative technological solution helps ensure excess food gets to those who need it and prevents quality food from going to the landfill.

The County has partnered with White Pony Express to donate excess food from events, such as the Board of Supervisors’ 2025 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Ceremony and an induction cooking demonstration hosted by BayREN at the Brentwood Community Center. If your business or event is looking to donate excess food or if you would like to volunteer for the Food Rescue Hero Initiative, download the app or learn more here.

National Farmers Market Week - August 3rd Through 9th

Let’s celebrate Farmers Markets! National Farmers Market Week is August 3-9, 2025. The event is a great opportunity to show the nation how much value markets bring to their communities.

Farmers markets are more than just places to buy fresh fruit and vegetables. They serve as vibrant hubs where farmers, artisans, and small businesses can connect directly with consumers. By supporting these markets, shoppers contribute to the local economy, helping farmers maintain a living wage while promoting sustainable farming practices. Many of these markets also offer organic and seasonal produce, reducing the environmental impact associated with long-distance food transport.

Yellow Fever Mosquito Prevention

The Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District (District) has been working to control Aedes aegypti, commonly known as the Yellow Fever mosquito, in Antioch, where the District found this non-native mosquito in late 2024 and again this year.

This mosquito can transmit the viruses that cause Yellow fever, as well as Zika, Dengue fever, and Chikungunya.

This mosquito is very small, just 1/8 - 1/4 inch, and can bite a person without the person even knowing they were bitten.

Standing water, even in small amounts, can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other pests. To prevent these nuisances and protect your home and garden, it’s essential to keep an eye on common places where water might collect.
