Dear Prairie North Pastors and Laity,

Grace and peace to you from Christ!

One of the greatest joys of my summer has been having one-on-one conversations with our district pastors. I treasure the opportunity to sit with each of our pastors and hear about the ways God is at work in your churches and communities.

Through these conversations, I have been especially touched by the many ways you are caring for people beyond the walls of the church. You are welcoming children through Vacation Bible School, accompanying young people on mission trips, bringing worship and companionship to those in nursing homes, and reaching out to vulnerable people in your communities. Thank you so much for all you do to expand God’s love in our communities!

As we look toward the fall, I invite you to join us on September 19 for a district gathering with Michael Beck on “Fresh Expressions.” (See more information below) It will be an inspiring time for both clergy and laity as we think creatively about how we can meet people where they are and share the love of Christ in new ways.

As summer begins to turn toward fall, please know how grateful I am for each of you and for the ministry we share.

Many blessings,

DS Hwa-Young

Prairie North District Superintendent

Practicing Hope Through Advocacy

Hope is more than optimism—it calls us to action. As Rev. Fabiola Grandon-Mayer reflects, advocacy is a spiritual practice that makes our faith visible by standing with those experiencing fear, uncertainty, and injustice. At this year's Annual Conference, nearly 200 clergy and laity embodied this active hope by standing with immigrant neighbors and advocating for dignity, justice, and compassion. Read more.

Learn how your congregation can practice hope through advocacy by participating in the Conference-Wide Faithful Action Day. Churches are encouraged to plan a prayer vigil, rally, march, training, or other faithful action on Sept. 13 or another convenient date.

Brush Up on Your Hospitality Skills

Small acts of hospitality can make a lasting difference. Avoid behaviors that make visitors uncomfortable, such as asking them to move, overwhelming them, ignoring them, or discussing church conflicts.

Instead, smile, connect and guide. Get to know visitors, invite them to events and ministries, show them around, and introduce them to people with similar interests or life experiences. One genuine connection may be all it takes to help someone feel at home. Read more.
