President's Message

Dear Carondelet community,

Welcome back! While it has been difficult to be away from campus and one another over the past few months, we have been inspired by the spirit and resilience of our students that was so evident during our first week of school.

We are grateful to our educators who have worked hard all summer, navigating frequent changes and expectations, to create experiences that welcome students to the school year, build community, and present opportunities for engagement. Our team of talented and passionate professionals are committed to ensuring that all students experience a meaningful and memorable year ahead recognizing that social connection, spiritual nourishment, and community building can best support our students during this time.

Much of what lies ahead will be unusual, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be good. As we navigate the challenges together I am confident we will learn, grow, and discover things about ourselves and each other that we didn’t know or appreciate. Demonstrating our compassion for one another will be important as we balance being responsible and adaptable with the need for ensuring the health and safety of our students, educators, and families. While we have numerous plans in place to respond to evolving circumstances, we will continue to develop innovative opportunities for student collaboration, community time, and social connection.

We look forward to the time when our campus comes alive again with the presence of our students, and in the meantime we remain grateful for your support, encouragement, and partnership in our educational mission.

First Flex Day this Wednesday
We’re excited to host our first Flex Day on Wednesday! Flex Day puts a special focus on community-building and enrichment activities that go beyond our existing academic program. Students will be given a wide range of activities to choose from throughout the day, allowing them to find the right balance between their academic, social, and extracurricular needs—including opportunities to take a break from online activities and screens. All students are expected to participate in every Flex Day. This week, all events will be held virtually. More information about offerings and how to sign-up will be posted to Schoology and covered in class early this week.
Announcing our Parent Fund Appeal!
Student tuition covers roughly 90% of Carondelet’s operating costs, and we rely on your support of the Parent Fund to support all student programs. Our goal this year is $350,000 and 100% participation by our parent community. You will be receiving additional information in the coming weeks about this important campaign, and thank you in advance for your thoughtful consideration.
Nicole Sullivan P’19, P’22, volunteer Co-Chair, shares why the Parent Fund matters for every student.
Carondelet Students and Families,
The Carondelet Athletics Department would like to reach out and give you a huge Cougar welcome to the 2020-21 school year.
The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), our state’s athletics governing body, recently shifted the fall season (see CIF Statement due to COVID-19 restrictions). At Carondelet we are creating as many opportunities as possible for our student-athletes to partake in athletics training and conditioning this fall following guidelines and parameters directed by CIF, Contra Costa Health Services, and the California Department of Public Health.
We are diligently working on plans to bring our student-athletes on campus to train at the Carondelet Athletics Complex (CAC) starting on August 24. We will hold sport-specific training as well as strength and conditioning sessions with stable cohorts of student-athletes. With over 500 student-athletes at Carondelet, we have to limit each athlete to one sports cohort to stay within the stable cohorts guidelines. We will keep each student-athlete cohort together for their strength and conditioning training sessions. Currently not all sports have camps. We will focus and concentrate on all fall sports first and foremost. If you do not see your sport you are encouraged to sign up for Strength & Conditioning until your camp opens up. Each cohort will meet in three-week sessions from August through December 2020.
We want to make sure that your daughter receives specific information for the sports camps she wishes to participate in this fall. We will strive to accommodate all requests. However, based on cohort availability, athletes may be limited to only one cohort in order to provide equitable opportunity for as many athletes as possible. Those requesting multiple cohorts may be restricted.

Have your student-athlete fill out the questionnaire by Wednesday, August 19.
The first Strength & Conditioning cohorts will start on August 24. We will be starting with two different cohorts for the first few weeks. Before your athlete can partake, they must be registered for athletics and have a current physical uploaded.
When we reach maximum capacity for both S&C cohorts, athletes will be put on a waiting list. After the first three weeks, athletes who have inconsistent attendance will be removed from the cohort and an athlete from the waitlist will be added following a one week "safe period."
Freshman can register for S&C Cohort 1 (Monday and Wednesday from 5:30-7:00 PM). All other athletes will need to register for S&C Cohort 2 (Tuesday and Thursday from 3:45-5:15 PM).

There are several actions that families need to complete in order to volunteer or for their student-athlete to participate in Athletics. Please review the Athletics Family Checklist to start the process.

Daily Prayer
"Sustaining us through distance learning"

Here is an example of one of our daily prayers this past week. In this daily prayer, we look at our past to remind ourselves what we're called t by the Sisters of St. Joseph in the present: the gift of sisterhood and unifying love. The prayer is adapted from "That All May Be One" - "Portrait of a 'daughter of St. Joseph'" written by Fr. Marius Nepper, SJ.
College & Career presents: Junior Jump Start
Virtual presentation, August 27, 7-8 PM

College and Career will be hosting our Junior Jump Start presentation on August 27 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. This virtual presentation will cover key changes in college admissions due to COVID-19. You'll hear from recent graduates with tips on how to navigate junior year and learn about specific things to do as a junior to prepare for the college application process. Plus, parents will learn how they can best support their daughters at this time during their road to college. We welcome questions you may have during this event. A Zoom link will be emailed to junior families and posted on Schoology the day of the event.
Updates from College & Career

Each week, your College & Career counselors will share updates for students and families about upcoming opportunities for your road to college. In this first edition of our updates we provide info about:

  • Updates and recommendations for SAT and ACT tests, including considering sites outside the Bay Area
  • Free virtual college fairs on Sundays throughout the fall
