Salem County Students Create Community Mural

Salem County Students Create Community Mural

[Elmer NJ, August 9, 2023] - The Salem Health and Wellness Foundation, in partnership with Appel Farm Arts & Music Center, successfully commissioned a vibrant and meaningful mural, created in collaboration with students from Penns Grove Carneys Point Regional School District and Creativity CoLaboratory Charter School (C3). The project was led by teaching artist Bridget Dodge of C3, fostering community building, artistic exploration, and personal growth for all participants.

The mural, entitled “The Faces and Places of a Healthy Salem County” and now permanently displayed at the Salem Health and Wellness Foundation office, stands as a testament to the power of collaboration in the arts. The mural highlights memorable images of Salem County, including the Old Salem Hospital, the big cowboy statue at Cowtown Rodeo, Penns Grove Middle School, and the ferris wheel from the Salem County Fairgrounds.

Dodge worked closely with students, ensuring ample planning time for the mural's design phase, compiling ideas into formal sketches, and presenting these ideas for collective consideration. Supervised painting time followed, allowing the participants to bring their artistic vision to life. The mural now graces the newly redesigned lobby area of the Salem Health and Wellness Foundation office.

“We are happy to partner with Appel Farm on this project. As part of our Foundation’s efforts to promote the health and wellness of Salem County, we are pleased to celebrate the creative work of our youth and have this mural in our lobby as a reminder of the value of the arts to the health and wellbeing of our community,” said Paul DiLorenzo, Executive Director of Salem Health and Wellness Foundation.

Coordinating partners include Salem Health and Wellness Foundation Board Member Jeanette Jackson, Supervisor of Special Education at Penns Grove Carneys Point Regional School District; Mrs. Trimmer, Art Teacher at Penns Grove High School; and Mrs. DiPatri, and Art Specialist at Penns Grove Middle School. Appel Farm staff members Kristina Hill, Director of Curriculum, and Lisa Suzanne Turner, Residency and Community Programs Manager also played essential roles in facilitating the collaboration.

ABOUT APPEL FARM

Appel Farm strives to co-create experiences that inspire people to unleash their inherent creativity, leading to self-discovery, personal growth, community building, and joy. Founded in 1960 by Albert and Clare Appel, Appel Farm began as a summer arts camp. The Appels, both professional musicians and music educators, believed that the arts play a crucial role in developing a child’s learning skills, encouraging personal growth, and instilling a sense of community and responsibility. They believed that all children have artistic talent, thus the camp was intended to promote a supportive environment in which the individual child can learn, experience and grow in a wide variety of artistic media. Now in its seventh decade, Appel Farm has evolved into a multidisciplinary regional arts center serving audiences, artists, and students

through local, regional, national, and international programs. Our programs build on the Appel’s founding principles, providing opportunities for arts education, arts appreciation and creative expression to more than 26,000 children and adults annually. More information about Appel Farm can be found at www.appelfarm.org or by calling (856) 358-2472.
