Coaches Corner

Hello Storm Team!!!

It’s been a while since I wrote a newsletter so I thought it would be a great time to shake off the rust and get back to it! It’s great to be back with you and yes, I missed you the last year.

I’m enjoying working with the coaches and seeing a bunch of new faces mixed in with all the regulars. The goal at the beginning of each year is to get out there and meet some new friends! That is the Storm Family!

Well, everyone survived the first week! You should be proud of yourselves. Most of you were a little lazy over the summer so that first week can tend to be a big punch in the gut. That’s ok, just remember a couple things: first is to keep smiling and having fun, the second is to be patient. Running is a journey every season… the last thing you want to do is work too hard too fast and get injured. The regulars of Storm will tell you every year I say the same thing: it takes 3 weeks before you start feeling good at each practice. It takes that long to get your body up to strength and your breathing to feel strong. So keep pushing and I promise you’ll get there.

So we begin week 2 and what’s on the schedule? I’m glad you asked.

Monday will be another distance run up to Copperhill and on the other side of the bike path. You should be stronger this week, so you’ll get a little further. And…. You should work on NOT WALKING!!! Pay attention to this next sentence and you will be confident to achieve that tomorrow night: step 1 is take off a little easier, step 2 set a target ahead of you like a tree or a turn and promise yourself you won’t stop before it. Tell your friend you are running with and CHALLENGE each other to not run. When you hit the target, immediately pick a new target! As you continue to run, imagine yourself getting stronger with each step and keep working all the way to the end!

Tuesday night you’ll be hitting a little fartlek workout. Just an intro… A fartlek workout is basically having purposeful variations of pace throughout. This helps to teach your body to push harder even when you get tired, it also can mimic race conditions as you never know what your competition will do in a race. You’ll want to know what it feels like to push harder in the middle, even when you think you don’t have anything left in the tank!

Thursday we will do the running form clinic!!! And… you’ll run dogpark loops again, but this time counterclockwise. Listen for the details of the workout. And when it’s your turn for the form clinic be ready and pay attention. The best distance runners are the most efficient runners. That requires having great running form!!

Saturday is the annual BEACH DAY!!! Be ready for fun in the sun, running on the beach, playing in the ocean, swimming to the floating docks, eating a hot dog and snow cone… and of course don’t forget about the relays!!!

Ok, long-winded on this one… it’s been a while….

2 goals this week: meet some more new friends or get to know someone better, and DON’T WALK…. 😊

See you out there!
