This week I highlight several proposed and ongoing building projects in and around Brookline Village. Please see the descriptions and links below to view updates and stay involved in these processes. Additionally, there are multiple openings for Town boards, commissions, and committees. Applications should be submitted by August 19.

News and Updates

Pierce School Project - The Planning Board will review the Pierce School Project Thursday, August 22 at 7:30 PM via Zoom. Register to attend here. Supporting documents are available in the agenda.


Brookline Village Projects - There are two projects that are in the planning stage and that will be developed in Brookline Village. Each project has an information page on the Town Website. The projects include:

Opportunities To Serve Your Community - The Town of Brookline is seeking dedicated and passionate residents to serve on various boards, committees, and commissions. These volunteer positions offer a unique opportunity to contribute directly to the community and shape the future of Brookline. Openings can be viewed and applied for here. Public Comment - A number of people raised concerns about the demolition of the Waldo-Durgin buildings. They spoke during initial public comment and then a continuation of public comment.


Miscellaneous - The Board approved the following miscellaneous items, licenses, and contracts.



Waldo-Durgin Project Demolition Update - The Board held a public meeting on the Waldo Durgin Project Demolition and shared concerns with how Chestnut Hill Realty (CHR) was handling informing the public of the presence of asbestos. The Board requested that CHR delay continued demolition of the Waldo Garage to allow time for abutters to be properly notified of the presence of asbestos and CHR's compliance with State regulations to protect public health.


Noise Bylaw Waiver (Public Hearing) - The Board approved a Request for a noise bylaw waiver to take down the Pierce Park overpass. Work to happen on Saturday, August 10, 2024 from 7:00AM-9:00PM with August 17, 2024 as a back-up weather day. 


Linkage Nexus Study - The Board received a presentation and recommended that the Planning Department, Economic Development Advisory Board, and Housing Advisory Board, stop work on the development of a commercial linkage fee.


Warrant Articles - The Board discussed of potential Select Board sponsored Warrant Articles for the upcoming Fall Town Meeting. 


Comprehensive Plan - The Board discussion and approved amended Select Board Guidance relating to the Comprehensive Plan. 


Boards and Commissions Annual Report - The Board received and discussed an update from the Brookline Commission for Women

Executive Session - The Board will enter into executive session for the following purposes:

  • Conducting strategy session in preparation for contract negotiations related to the reappointment of the Town Administrator.
  • Discussing litigation strategy in potential multidistrict litigation relating to social media harm. 
  • Approval of executive session minutes for 5/21, 6/25, and 6/9/24.

  • Promotion of Police Officer Jeffery Emmerso to the position of Sergeant. 
  • Hire requestsTwo (2) Motor Equipment Operations II (LN3) and Two (2) Motor Equipment Repairpersons (LN6). 
  • Acceptance of a $5,000 grant from the Mass Emergency Management Agency.
  • Extra Work Order #4 related to contract PW/23-01 "School Grounds Maintenance" with M. Neves, Inc. in the amount of $11,872.00.
  • Transfer of an All Alcoholic Beverages License from Three Treasures Concept, Inc. d/b/a Xiang's Hunan Kitchen to Jumbo Seafood Brookline, Inc d/b/a Jumbo Seafood at 1032 Commonwealth Ave. Proposed manager will be Catherence Chan. 
  • Following approvals for Jumbo Seafood Brookline at 1032 Comm Ave
  • Common Victualler License - Operating hours Mon - Sun 11AM to 12AM. 44 seats
  • Entertainment License Mon - Sun 11AM to 12AM
  • Alternate Manager - Kenneth Leung
  • Transfer of an All Alcoholic Beverages License from Bright Life View LLC d/b/a Sapporo Ramen to Togaru LLC d/b/a IRU at 238 Washington Street. Proposed manager will be Taiji Mineo.

  • Common Victualler - Hours of operation will be Monday – Sunday 12:00PM – 12:00AM. Seating will consist of 52 inside seats.

  • Question of approving the application for a change in D/B/A from Seoul Society Inc d/b/a Fiya Chicken to Seoul Society Inc d/b/a Fiyahen at 1024 Commonwealth Ave. 


Boards and Commissions Interviews 


Entertainment License - 1187 Beacon St - Public Hearing - Question of approving an entertainment license for Mad Hatter Experience LLC d/b/a Mad Hatter Experience at 1187 Beacon Street. Entertainment is an interactive experience that will be held from September 13, 2024 – January 5, 2025 including laser lights shows. Hours of operation Monday - Sunday 3:00PM–11:00PM. As of August 9, 2024, this application has been reviewed and approved by the Police Department and Building Department (and is no longer pending). 


EV Charging Fees - Discussion and possible vote to implement a charging fee of $0.35/KWh, and an overstay fee of $10.00/hour after a 30-minute grace period following the completion of charging, at all Town-owned parks. 


Human Services Gap Analysis & Recommendations - Presentation by Public Health & Human Services Director Sigalle Reis on the human services gap analysis and recommendations. 


Discussion of Warrant Articles 

  • Update from the Planning Department on FY25 work plan, including zoning warrant  articles for Fall 2024 Special Town Meeting. 
  • Discussion of a potential Warrant Article to accept a restrictive covenant in favor of the Town between the Town and Puddingstone at Chestnut Hill, LLC.
