Going Electronic

When I was a kid, one of my best friends worked for the newspaper and I often joined him when things got busy. We affectionately called our local paper the "Dunedin Mullet-Wrapper." My early association with the newspaper business led to two things - a curious attraction to the smell of printer's ink and a love of seeing my words in print.

The Ybor City Chamber has had a partnership with our local newspaper La Gaceta for over twenty years, printing our monthly newsletter La Stima each month and having it sent to our members. As Patrick tells it, this arrangement was born as a cost-saving strategy, so that the Chamber didn't have to layout, print and mail La Stima. Our common bond with La Gaceta, however, goes much deeper. We are both champions of the Historic District, defending its preservation and promoting its re-development.

As evidenced by this issue of La Stima, we are going electronic with our newsletter. This will enable us to increase the frequency of publication and provide more timely information to our members. I will miss seeing our work in print and the wonderful partnership we have enjoyed with the staff and management of La Gaceta. I have to think all those La Gaceta readers, who are not members of the Ybor Chamber, have gotten something out of reading about all the fun and interesting things we do.

As of the August Membership Luncheon, we have stopped sending notices by surface mail and converted to a new on-line system that not only allows members to register in advance, but also to pay on-line. We were able to do this because all but a hand-full of our members now have access to e-mail; a big change from five years ago.
