Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site
August 16th is the anniversary of the Battle of Bennington, fought between British forces and New England militiamen in 1777 during the Saratoga Campaign of the American Revolution. The engagement actually took place ten miles from Bennington, Vermont and in spite of its name, the battle took place entirely within New York State, in the rolling hills of northeastern Rensselaer County. The Battle of Bennington slowed the British advance from Quebec in their bid to control the Hudson River, and ultimately set the stage for decisive American victories at Saratoga in September and October, now regarded as the turning point of the war.

The 1777 battlefield is now preserved as the 276-acre Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site, which features interpretive panels and monuments. On August 16th, the Bennington Battlefield will host a 238th anniversary ceremony. For more on Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site, and to plan a visit, please visit www.hudsonrivervalley.com or www.nysparks.com.
