We just had our final meeting with our publisher, Sarah Bauhan, of Grove Street Books. Our book, From Blue Ribbon to Code Blue, will be released this October.
Writing this book turned out to be a far bigger project than I ever could have imagined, but as I look back on the endless hours we spent writing - rewriting - editing - and correcting - I feel as though it was a way to retrace my journey and another step forward in my recovery.
From Blue Ribbon to Code Blue
is written in both my voice and my mother's. It is a story of a girl who thought she had everything, and never dreamt that one day she would be in a terrible car accident and lie in a coma for months, only to face insurmountable obstacles that she would have to overcome to find a new life.
My mother and I wrote this book together, really for
the same reason that I deliver my inspirational keynote speeches all over the country: to help others face what seem to be impossible challenges, and to never give up or give in.
Even if I ever thought of giving up, I couldn't. I had family by my side, telling me again and again that I would get better. My mother refused to listen to the doctors who said to her, "Jen will make all of her improvements in the first year, but after that, there will be no more improvement." They were wrong.
I have been given a second chance at life, and I am determined to honor this gift.
Thank you for your support of me, and the J Field Foundation. I'm grateful to have your help spreading the word about our book. Please email me if you'd like me to come speak at your local bookstore, library, school, or other organization.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!
