A Message from the Board President

I hope you've been enjoying every moment of this spectacular Maine summer.

As a valued member of our Maine Women's Fund community, I want to be sure to communicate the news that our CEO, Sarah Ruef-Lindquist, resigned in July and to assure you that the Fund is on solid footing thanks to Sarah's leadership. The timing is a beneficial reflection point for the Fund.   During Sarah's tenure as CEO, she expanded grant-making and statewide engagement, strengthening the Fund's future. We wish Sarah all the best in her future endeavors.

We the members of the Board of Directors are eager and well-prepared for the exciting opportunity to guide the Fund forward from a position of organizational strength and momentum. We are grateful for the tremendously talented women who are committed to working together to navigate the Fund's best course. With Board and staff continuing to work closely, we are confident that the Fund's critical programs, partnerships, people and purpose will remain on target during this transition period.

Summer is such an exciting time at the Fund. Last month, we received final reports from the eleven organizations across Maine who received   Fund grants in 2015 . We ask our grantees to share data about the women and girls directly served by their work, positive outcomes, challenges, new partnerships or relationships forged, and future plans for their program. Our favorite section of the report invites grantees to tell us stories illustrating the impact of their Fund grant. We've already begun to schedule a year's worth of visits with our fifteen   2016 grant recipients , too.

For a second year, Maine Women's Fund was selected to receive all fundraising dollars raised by SheJAMs' all-women's   Power of She 5K  race to be held at 8 a.m this Sunday, August 21, in Portland. Five of the Fund board have already registered to run or walk, and we welcome you to join us! You will find   more details in this newsletter.

Thank you for all you do for Maine women and girls!

Sincerely,

Natalie Solotoff
Maine Women's Fund Board President

Spotlight on Impact: Maine Women's Policy Center

"I grew up surrounded by songs of rebellion, protest, peace, and justice. I watched Princess Leia stand up to Darth Vader, Wonder Woman defeat the bad guys with her lasso of truth, Jessica Fletcher fearlessly take on sexists and murderers. The ringwraith who couldn't be defeated by any man was brought down by a woman. Is it any wonder that I grew up to believe I could save the world?!

Well, I did believe that then and I still believe it now. Though along the way I realized that you can't save the world by yourself..."
~ Kathy Kilrain del Rio, Director of Program and Development at Maine Women's Policy Center,
accepting the Ruth L. Lockhart Feminist Activist Award from the Mabel Wadsworth Women's Health Center

So, if you can't do it by yourself, what do you do? If you're 2015 grantee Maine Women's Policy Center (MWPC), you create partnerships! Of all the New England States, Maine has the highest number of women living in poverty1, the highest number of women working part-time2, and the highest number of women earning less than $20,000/year3. In looking at these statistics, MWPC determined that counteracting these trends would require highlighting economic security as an issue and proposing solutions and building a statewide network of women working together locally  on their own behalf.  Continue reading...
