President's Message

Although the weather still says "SUMMER" - Fourth quarter is just around the corner.  Before the crazy schedules and demands of the season consume your calendars, please plan to give yourself moments of reprieve - by joining your colleagues for networking, collaborating, and story-telling.  Laughter is an amazing stress reliever.  And, based on some of the stories I heard last year - you can't make this stuff up!  :)

Region 3 Leadership conference:
I want to thank Ava Lillmars, Cindy Trahin, Crystal Michel, and Amber Frey for joining me at the Region 3 Leadership conference in Chicago, IL.  It was a wonderful event and great information was shared amongst fellow NAHU leaders.  It was awesome having these leaders take time away from their families and work load to represent our chapter.

IN State Chapter AHU Support:
Ruste Pontenberg, Rita Musser, and I participated in the Indiana State Strategic Planning session on August 12, 2016.  We reviewed the State chapter's goals and their continued commitment to serve and support the local chapters.  This past year, the state chapter agreed to cover the local chapter's portion of the liability insurance, helped offset the cost of sending members to both the Annual convention and Region Leadership conference, Paid for the filing and CE fees for our members to attend the Live NAHU webinar earlier this year, golf sponsorship, and provide scholarship dollars for first time attendees to Capitol Conference in February.  Next time you see a State Board member, please be sure to thank them for their service and commitment to our association and industry.  These are volunteers working hard for our benefit.  (Hint:  We have 4 state board members in our chapter - Cindy Trahin, Denny Wright, Rita Musser, and Ruste Pontenberg.)

Next month, September 19th - Mike Nader from Faegre, Baker, Daniels, will be presenting a 2 hour CE on several topics surrounding ACA and employer reporting requirements, deadlines and penalties.  This will be a great meeting for both agents and employer clients.  Thank you to PNPNI for sponsoring this program.

In addition to our membership meeting in October, 1 hour CE with Mark Rogers, Delta Dental; we are working to bring Two LIVE NAHU webinars.  Janet Trautwein, NAHU Executive Director, will be speaking to us on October 5th at noon, and again December 1st at noon. Both webinars will be held on the Lutheran Campus in the Kachmann Auditorium.  These webinars will provide pre-election and post-election commentary and are Free to our members and their guests.  These webinars will be worth 1 hour of CE each pending approval.

Two Special Events:
Annual Golf Outing Fundraiser - September 16, 2016 at Brookwood Golf Club.  WE NEED YOU!!  Our committee has been planning this event for several months but need your help!!  We are still in need of golfers, sponsors and donations.  If your company can donate a door prize or gift card, items to place in the golfers' welcome bags, donate snacks, beverages, or even personal donations to make this a success fundraiser, contact Dotty Wiggin or Jeff Fabini.  Remember, Erin's House will benefit from this event - so come out and show your support.

Holiday Celebration - December 20, 2016 at Hotel Fort Wayne.  Back by popular demand, an evening event.  You and a guest are invited to celebrate our chapter's success and the close of the year.

Mad Anthonys Children's Hope House is our featured nonprofit for the month of August.  Mad Anthonys Children's Hope House is dedicated to providing overnight accommodations in a family-centered, homelike, supportive environment to families with children in any community hospital.  They offer this to families who would sleep in cars or hospital hallways or waiting rooms for a donation of just $10 per day, and promise that no family will be turned away due to inability to pay.  Executive Director Andrew Gritzmaker will be speaking at our August meeting.  Learn more about this fantastic organization on their website,
Some of you may be new to the chapter, and maybe others just need a refresher.  Below are some basic facts about HUPAC, what it is, and how it works for you.

  • HUPAC is a Political Action Committee - it's purpose is to raise funds from NAHU members to support political campaigns of candidates who believe in private sector solutions for the health and financial security of all Americans.
  • HUPAC has two funds - The Candidate Fund, which accepts individual contributions (up to $5,000) from NAHU members and their spouses.  Funds from this account are given to political candidates, both challengers and incumbents, Democrats and Republicans.  The Administrative Fund receives funds from individuals and businesses.  This fund financially supports the operating costs of HUPAC and has no donation limits.
