In last month's newsletter I wrote that the cost of VOS conference meeting rooms is mitigated when attendees reserve resort accommodations through Penny Smith, VOS' travel agent. Penny is one of four people VOS pays for services (the other three are Maralyn Probst, Meggan Brovege, and Heidi DeCamp). Penny does far more for VOS than organize travel and rooms. She works behind the scenes as an event organizer, using her long experience in the ski resort industry to negotiate prices for food, conference rooms, and lift tickets, and generally smooths the way for VOS.
Penny starts the meeting planning process with Maralyn and the VOS board three years or more before the actual meeting date. The preparations for a meeting start in full about one year before the conference begins, at a site visit to the next year's location: Last March, Penny, her husband architect Bill Smith, Maralyn, and I visited Snowbird, Utah, the site for the 2017 meeting, for three days. Bill designs the exhibit hall layout, mapping out a jigsaw puzzle of table sizes to help Maralyn accommodate exhibitors' needs and wants while assuring a politically correct juxtaposition of competing products. He also plans the arrangement of chairs and tables in the lecture hall and makes sure we have enough seating.
Penny and Maralyn take the lead roles at the site visit, and since Penny usually knows several people at the site, she liaisons with the resort staff and attends planning meetings. For example, Penny, Maralyn and I spent four or five hours meeting with Snowbird facilitators planning the conference menu. Penny suggested food choices off a long list provided by Snowbird, Maralyn kept an eye on costs, and I did my best to look presidential.
The modest amount that VOS pays Penny (I assume some trickles down to Bill, who volunteers his services) is for her conference organizing duties, which are in addition to her travel agent duties. Like all the people who help organize the VOS conference, she pulls double duty.

VOS Scientific Program Chair and Assistant Scientific Program Chair
We invite practitioners, academicians, and researchers interested in large animal, small animal, and exotic species to submit abstracts of novel studies in practical and scientific topics related to veterinary orthopedics and traumatology. Preference will be given to abstracts that have clinical relevance. Papers addressing results of controlled retrospective and prospective clinical studies are strongly encouraged. Presentations will be limited to
10 minutes and followed by 5 minutes of discussion. Posters must fit within the 4' (height) x 4' (width) area provided.
Call for papers will open on August 15th, 2016 and close on November 1st, 2016 for both podium presentations and posters. Visit the

SOUND ANNOUNCES 1,000TH INSTALLATION OF SMART DR IMAGING SYSTEM
Unprecedented, Record-Breaking Installation in Veterinary Industry
Sound™, the world's #1 Veterinary Digital Imaging and PACS company, announced in July the 1,000th installation of its widely heralded
Sound SMART DR™
Digital Radiography Imaging System, setting a record in the veterinary industry since the introduction of the system two years ago.
"We are pleased to announce this Smart DR milestone and acknowledge the unprecedented achievement of 1000 small animal DR installations in less than two years," said Tom Jacobi, president of Sound. "SMART DR created a simple image acquisition workflow that our new users and upgraded clients love, but it's the consistency of the quality of radiographs which is responsible for the many accolades of the MUSICA images we hear about from veterinary radiologists, surgeons and boarded specialists."
MUSICA Intelligent Image processing is exclusive to Sound™ and delivers consistently high image quality, eliminating the need for patient and view-specific tuning files. Smart DR optimizes sharp bone and soft tissue detail in the same image, which results in consistent image quality patient-to-patient, view-to-view, and user-to-user. Sound's Smart DR refines the image experience with seamless integration from capture to cloud to review.
According to Dr. Bennett Fagin, DVM, ACVR, "The images from SMART DR are above and beyond the quality of any other images we see, and follow-up images are identical even when different techs are used. In my opinion, Smart DR is in a class by itself."
Blue Pearl's Imaging PACS administrator, Terry Besnier, RVT, says, "SMART DR is by far the easiest DR software we have found. Three steps and you're taking radiographs - it's that easy. We can train the staff in 15 to 20 minutes with the on-board help videos, so it's great for new technicians. In addition, Sound has 24/7/365 tech support and live chat on the system, so in one call or chat session you are taken care of."
To learn more about Sound SMART DR, please visit
http://www.SoundVet.com/SmartDR, or call 1-800-268-5354 option 1, to schedule a free demonstration.
