UMSON to Expand FNP Specialty to Shady Grove |
Beginning fall 2017, the University of Maryland School of Nursing will offer its Doctor of Nursing Practice Program's Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Specialty at the Universities at Shady Grove. Currently, the specialty is only offered in Baltimore. However, the FNP specialty is in high demand, and the Baltimore location cannot accommodate all qualified students.

Edwards Recognized As Birdland Community Hero
Lori Edwards, DrPh, MPH, BSN '80, RN, PHCNS-BC, assistant professor and associate director for global occupational health, Office of Global Health, was recognized as a Birdland Community Hero at an Orioles game held on Sunday, July 24, against the Cleveland Indians. The Orioles Birdland Community Heroes program honors and recognizes community heroes who inspire us through their spirited commitment to extend a hand in charity, service, hope, and harmony. This recognition honors the heroism of members of the extended Orioles community from all walks of life, occupations, and diverse backgrounds who have distinguished themselves by selflessly working or volunteering in fields that care for, serve, teach, protect, and improve the lives of others, around the corner or around the globe, who are most in need. Friedmann Awarded IAHAIO's Inaugural Johannes Odendaal Human-Animal Interaction Distinguished Researcher Award
Erika Friedmann, PhD, professor and associate dean of research, was recently awarded the International Association of Human Animal Interaction Organizations' Johannes Odendaal Human-Animal Interaction (HAI) Distinguished Researcher Award at its triennial conference held in Paris. This inaugural honor is given to an individual who has produced distinguished HAI research that has been published or accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal or as chapters in a book. Colloca and Fountain Serve as Faculty Mentors for Students in
M Scholars Program
Luana Colloca, MD, PhD, associate professor, and
Lily Fountain, PhD, RN, CNM, assistant professor, served as faculty mentors to students Zachary Lupuloff and Harleen Singh, respectively, this summer. Lupuloff and Singh worked on research projects as part of the M Scholars Program. The M Scholars Program is a mentor-based, educational experience designed to inform and enrich students' knowledge above and beyond a set course of study. It creates a unique experience for students at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) to expand awareness, enlighten choices, and round out professional goals by tapping into the complementary curriculum strengths of UMB and UMCP. The students worked full time on research projects for 10 weeks.

UMSON Donates to Victims of Flood in Clay County, W.Va.
Thanks to the generosity of faculty, staff, family, and friends, the University of Maryland School of Nursing was able to deliver two loads of donated items to families affected by the flood in Clay County, W.Va., in late June. Requested donations included cleaning supplies, camping stoves, tarps, tents, and box fans.

UMSON Faculty and Alumni Visit EPA
UMSON faculty and alumni visited the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in June to present a letter from nurses thanking Administrator Gina McCarthy for her efforts to reduce methane air pollution. Methane from energy production is a major component of smog and greenhouse gasses. The event was organized by the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments.

ANAC Leading Call to Action in Fight to End AIDS and Stop HIV Transmission
The Association of Nurses in AIDS Care, in partnership with nursing organizations around the world, is leading an initiative to ensure the voices of nurses are heard through a call to action.
The call to action provides a concise summary of nursing's voice in the fight to end AIDS and stop HIV transmission.

Welcome New Faculty & Staff
Pei-Ying Chuang, PhD, RN, assistant professor, will join the Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health, effective Aug. 22. She comes from the University of Texas Health Science Center. Dr. Chuang earned a PhD in acute and tertiary care from the University of Pittsburgh.
Kathleen McElroy, PhD '16, MS '10, BSN '98, assistant professor, will join the Department of Family and Community Health, effective Aug. 8. Dr. McElroy earned her PhD from the University of Maryland School of Nursing. She has exceptional clinical experience that she gained while serving as a registered nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. McElroy also brings a wealth of teaching experience, as she has served as a clinical instructor and guest lecturer at the UMSON.
Kathryn Lamp, PhD, will join the Universities at Shady Grove as an academic support coordinator, effective Aug. 8. Prior to joining UMSON, Dr. Lamp served as a psychology tutor and teaching assistant at the University of Montana, and a tutor at Educational Connections. Dr. Lamp earned a PhD and master's in experimental psychology from the University of Montana.
Kelly Pawlak began serving as assistant director of admissions on July 25. Kelly comes to UMSON from the University of Tampa where she was an admissions counselor. She was also an assistant director of admissions for the Art Institute of Tampa. Ms. Pawlak earned her bachelor's degree in communications from the University of South Florida.
Robin Poedel, PhD, RN, FNP-BC, assistant professor, joins the Department of Family and Community Health, effective Aug. 8. Dr. Poedel has served as a clinical supervising faculty member at the University of Arizona College of Nursing. She has also held the position of certified registered nurse practitioner at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Poedel obtained her PhD in Nursing and her post master's family nurse practitioner certificate from the
University of Wisconsin.
Giordana Segneri, MA, has been appointed director, marketing and public relations, effective Aug. 22. Ms. Segneri most recently served as associate director, communications and marketing, at the University of Baltimore where she lead a team responsible for writing and designing the University's publications, web development, public and media relations and advertising and marketing efforts. She earned her master's in publications design from the University of Baltimore.
Sharone Stewart, MS, clinical instructor, will join the Department of Partnerships, Professional Education and Practice, effective Aug. 8. Ms. Stewart earned a master's in nursing from Drexel University and bachelor of science in nursing from Kaplan University. Previously, Ms. Stewart worked at Mercy Medical Center as a clinical nurse in the emergency department.
Roseann Velez, DNP, RN, assistant professor, joined the Department of Family and Community Health, on July 11. Dr. Velez earned her DNP at Chatham University, post master's from the University of Maryland School of Nursing, and a master's in nursing from New York University. She most recently taught at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, and served as a family nurse practitioner at Greater Baltimore Medical Center.
Man (Grace) Zhang, PhD, will join UMSON as a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health, effective Aug. 22. Dr. Zhang earned her PhD in nutritional biology from the University of California, Davis. Prior to joining UMSON, Dr. Zhang served as a nutrition teaching assistant at the University of California, Davis. She also has extensive research experience studying the mechanism of milk proteins that regulate the development of the neonatal small intestine.

Career Resources for Alumni
UMSON students and alumni can access professional career services through the Student Success Center. Services include a job board, resume and cover letter writing workshops, interviewing skills workshops, mock interviews, and online resources. There is also an annual career fair to help job seekers. Docents Needed for Living History Museum
The UMSON Living History Museum is seeking alumni volunteers to serve as docents. The museum is open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday during the academic semesters. Docents are also needed for occasional special events, such as school tours and open houses for new and prospective students. Scheduling is flexible. Susan L. Bindon, DNP '11, RN-BC, CNE, presented the closing plenary session, "Building Bridges, One Question at a Time," at the Association of Nursing Professional Development's annual convention in Pittsburgh. She also presented a pre-conference workshop on "Writing for Publication."
Shannon Idzik, DNP '10, MS '03, CRNP, FAANP, participated in the Convenient Care Association's Retail Health Workforce Think Tank,
Creating Effective Experiences for Future Retail Health Clinicians, held in Orlando on July 20. The purpose of the think tank was to develop a set of recommendations for advanced practice provider education and academic programs.
Veronica Njie-Carr, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, FWACN, participated in the National Institute on Aging Butler-Williams Scholars Program that was held last month on the National Institutes of Health's Campus in Bethesda, Md. The program featured
lectures, seminars, and small group discussions in research design relative to aging, including issues relevant to the aging of ethnic and racial minorities. Dr. Njie-Carr was one of 50 participants selected.
Kristen Rawlett, PhD '14, FNP-BC, has been selected to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) Research Committee. The committee will serve as an internal advisory group to the AANP Research Department for the purpose of the development, evaluation and dissemination of research projects that focus on nurse practitioners.
Egidia Rugwizangoga, a master's student in the health services leadership and management specialty, was selected as the winner of the 2016 American Association of Colleges of Nursing-Graduate Nursing Student Academy's
Nurses Week 2020 Vision for Nursing Video Contest.

Karin Russ, MS, RN,
has published an article entitled "Developmental Exposure to Environmental Chemicals in Children and Metabolic Changes in Children" in the journal Current Problems in Pediatric and Adolescent Health Care. This article examines the possibility that endocrine disrupting chemicals may contribute to the development of metabolic diseases in children. Resources available to health care providers to counsel patients on how to reduce chemical exposures are summarized, and recommendations for environmental policy changes are reviewed. Read here.
Nicole Smith, MS '14, RN, CNE, and Mary Pat Ulicny, MHA, MS '11, RN, CNE, gave two podium presentations in June at the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning Conference 2016 in Grapevine, Texas. The titles of the presentations were "Using a Simulated EHR to Flip the Lab" and "Using an On-Line Course Management System to Achieve Transparency in Clinical Simulation Lab Management: Rustling up Low Cost Solutions."
Nina Trocky, DNP, RN, NE-BC, CNE, has been selected to participate in the Oral Health Nursing Education and Practice's initiative to lead the national oral health agenda. Dr. Trocky's Interprofessional Oral-Systemic Health Curricular Innovation proposal was selected for funding. Her grant is for $2,000.
