IT'S OLD DRUM SEASON

The giant bulls started arriving a few weeks ago and more will be coming as spawn season arrives. Check-out the guy on the left. His comment this week was "I think I've got something". Congrats on your first bull red. The first moon phase for the month is August 11 and this is when the old timers consider the first spawn. The season will run thru September. Depending on the customers wishes, we use popping corks, topwater, bottom fish and fly fish for these bucket list fish.
WHERE TO FIND THE BIGGINS' - BOTTOM FISHING

Bait hangs out around structure and bigger fish hang out around bait. So the key is to find the proper structure. Below are some pics of what to look for on your GPS units. Pic 1 shows a rock formation. Pic 2 shows a ledge. You will find the rocks in depths of usually 15' or greater and they are scattered around the river and the sound. The rocks might be a single formation or a cluster. Both are target areas. When bottom fishing, use multiple lines and try to place some bait on top of the rocks and some beside the rocks so you have bait at different levels of the water column. In addition, you will find the ledges all down the river's edges. The pic shows a drop from 8' to 13'. Again try to place lines on top of the ledge and at the bottom of the ledge. For bait I like using fresh mullet and menhaden.
WHERE TO FIND THE BIGGINS' - POPPING CORK AND TOPWATER
For popping corks and topwater, you'll have greater success if you can find the bait balls. In the morning they'll be closer to shore and move into deeper water as the day progresses. Fishing stealth is very important. The quieter the better.
But if you can't find the bait balls, then remember bait fish hangs out around structure like drops and ledges. For bottom fishing, I usually set-up on drops with a minimum depth of 8'. For popping corks and topwater, I look for depths of 2'-5' to start the day.
FLOUNDERS, STRIPERS, SLOT DRUMS AND TROUT
In August and September a lot of our attention is on the giant bull reds simply because they are a bucket list fish. However, the flounders, slots, stripers and trout are still here. The bonus is they're not being fished as hard and experience less pressure. Some anglers like to spit a trip and fish for a couple of hours for the big boys and then switch to a dinner fish for the last half of their trip. Toucans and M&M restaurants will be happy to cook your fish.

TENNESSEE MOUNTAINS TROUT TRIP
OCT. 12-14: 2 Openings
OCT. 14-16 - Full

Due to demand we have a second trip to the mountains and have room for 2 more anglers, either spinning or fly. Give me a call. I need to firm up the details quickly.

FALSE ALBACORE: MID-OCTOBER TO MID-DECEMBER

I'm taking reservations now. I'll begin fishing for albies on October 18 at the Project Healing Water event and fish into December depending on the bite and the weather. If you think a bull drum can pull, these guys are stronger.
