WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT

It is always satisfying to watch the success of various WTS programs, and nothing could be truer than looking at the young women who have and are currently participating in the Transportation YOU program.

Amy Phan, a four- year WTS - DFW Transportation YOU participant and graduate student from Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School in Dallas, spent the summer interning for Solaray Engineering. Amy's internship gave her the opportunity to experience the day-to-day work of a civil engineer. She was able to learn the beginning stages of design on MicroStation and OptiNT6. Additionally, she assisted with testhole reports and with some of the field visits, including participating in the BNSF Technical Tour. Amy enjoyed her hands-on experience within the civil engineering realm. The possibilities in transportation are endless and we wish Amy all the best, as she begins her next phase - studying engineering at Iowa State University.

The opportunity for Amy to have exposure to engineering and transportation is made possible by you and the companies that support the WTS Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter. Hats off to everyone who continues to contribute to this organization! From helping to raise scholarship funds through the Golf Tournament, to the Annual Awards Banquet, to working one-on-one with young women, participating in the Transportation YOU program, there are many ways you can play a part in the future of this industry.

I urge you to see firsthand how our programs are working to promote transportation and related fields of study. I challenge you to raise the bar on our fundraising efforts. However you may help, I think you'll find it fulfilling and rewarding to shape the future of transportation. I look forward to your participation.

Until then,

Adrienne Williams

JULY WTS EVENT RECAP - BNSF Technical Tour

This tour was SOLD OUT and for good reason!  WTS members had the opportunity to learn about the history of BNSF through various art pieces and artifacts.  Dating back to the late 1800's all the way to the new century, some of the pieces were painted and crafted depicting life and landscaping, according to the artist, to encourage tourism.  Talk about "social media" of their time! The tour included original hand-written Transportation Permits required during this era.  BNSF will soon remove these and create replicas to preserve the natural handwritten ink on these delicate pieces of paper.  If you were unable to make the tour, it is definitely worth reserving your very own, while going back in time through various artist's eyes.
