Creating Calm within Crisis: the Power of Meditation

Perhaps you were as drawn to the news reports of twelve soccer players and their coach trapped in a cave in Thailand this summer, like me. A miraculous story of survival, and of the power of the practice of meditation in times of crisis.

As we learned upon their rescue, the boys' coach,  Ekapol Chantawong, had studied vipassana or mindfulness meditation as a youth in a Buddhist monestary. Under the most challenging of circumstances, he taught his young charges to observe, to slow their breath, and to remain calm in the face of the unknown. Through their meditation practice, they conserved oxygen, and avoided panic despite lack of food and uncertainty of rescue. Not many of us will have the need to practice mindfulness trapped in a flooded cave for two weeks; however we will be faced with obstacles, fear and challenges in our lives. How will we meet these challenges...with calm or chaos? The choice and the power is ours. 2018 Schedule

Meditation Maintenance Sessions  are a great way to give yourself a monthly self-care "tune-up" by joining with fellow meditators to discuss insights and challenges of your practice.

Our general schedule is the 2nd Wednesday (evening) and 2nd Friday (afternoon) of each month, but some months the schedule may be on a different week. Check the StressResources.com website for an up to date calendar. 

You are welcome to attend each month or simply on an occasional basis. You will find a supportive and welcoming respite in the midst of your busyness.

Any updates or changes to this schedule will be posted on the calendar in the events section of StressResources.com

Workshop this Sunday Aug 19
Have you heard about #theKindnessRocksProject? It is a grass-roots initiative to come together to create and share messages of compassion..In other words a perfect activity to express come creativity and compassion mindfully. 

Stress Resources is pleased to participate in this heartfelt project by hosting a workshop to create, paint and share messages of compassion on Sunday August 19 from 3-5 pm at our office at 97 Lowell Rd, Concord MA.

All materials are provided, but feel free to bring some smooth rocks of your own. Space is limited to 8 participants. Come and be inspired! No previous experience necessary.

Collective Wisdom
Australian physician, Dr. Catherine Crock is doing amazing work in addressing pain, stress and anxiety in medically complex kids, their families and caregivers. I recently became acquainted with her work with the HUSH Foundation and I am definitely a super fan! 

Collective Wisdom is the newest Hush Foundation offering...it is now at the top of my playlist. Check out the Hush Foundation and their projects focused on creating environments of healing.

The program that you have heard about... MBSR

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is considered the gold standard of stress management and meditation programs by the healthcare community. Most of the studies that are referenced in the news on the benefits of meditation are based on MBSR. 

Stress Resources' Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program (MBSR) is taught by well-respected mindfulness expert, Pam Ressler. Pam is also the co-creator and co-director of a graduate program in theory and practice of mindfulness at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Group classes begin on:
Wednesday, Oct 10 (morning class) and
Monday, Oct 15 (evening class) and will be offered in historic Concord, Massachusetts. 

Class size is limited to a maximum of 15 participants (and a minimum of 6 participants)

Stress Resources' Bookshelf
I love this new book that arrived on the Stress Resources' bookshelf recently.

The Mindful Twenty-Something by Holly B. Rogers, MD is a concise, readable introduction to mindfulness practices, specifically for the millennial generation. 

Based on the mindfulness training program called Koru Mindfulness.  Koru is the Maori word for the spiral shape of a new fern frond, symbolizing new growth. Lots of practical advice and structure for those interested in exploring mindfulness. A well researched and practical book to start exploring mindfulness.
