Try Out the DECinfo Locator
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) has just released an interactive map that allows users to access public data on environmental quality and outdoor recreation on publicly managed sites throughout the state.
With more than 50 data layers available, this is the first application that shows both environmental quality monitoring and natural resource information together in one place. This mapping application generates results specific to locations across the state, including water and air permits, enforcement actions, recreational assets, environmental education facilities, and sites in the State Superfund and Brownfield Cleanup programs. If you were looking for a good place to fish, you could narrow down your search to publicly accessible fishing locations in any geographical area in the state and then check the environmental quality of that body of water. Want to learn more about DECinfo Locator? Check the
NYSDEC's website

video tutorial
on how to use it.

Recognizing Habitats Field Workshops
The Hudson River Estuary Program is offering an outdoor field workshop for municipal officials and land trust staff to increase their ability to recognize and evaluate major habitat types. Participants will learn how maps and aerial photos can be used to interpret the landscape, and observe features and quality indicators of important habitats such as meadow, forest, calcareous ledge, intermittent stream, intermittent woodland pool, and hardwood swamp. The workshop will include discussion on land development considerations and habitat conservation techniques. The workshop is designed especially for members of municipal planning boards, conservation advisory councils, zoning boards of appeal, staff of land trusts, and other agencies that are regularly reviewing land development proposals, advising landowners and developers, and making land management or regulatory decisions. There is no cost for the workshop, but space is limited, so participants are encouraged to register early. Municipal training certificates will be available.
The workshop will be offered in two locations:
September 6 in Dutchess County
and
September 20 in Orange County

Harnessing the Power of Stories: A Workshop/Webinar Series
Representatives from 45 area organizations participated in Greater Hudson Heritage Network’s workshop series on Harnessing the Power of Stories, held at Boscobel House & Gardens in Garrison. In this three-part series, participants gained insight into identifying the structure or "bones" of a story with Tom Lee, learned theater techniques to apply to historic interpretation with Sean McNall, and mastered active ways to create, launch, and maintain living history interpretations with Kandie Carle.
One attendee said their participation in the workshops has “given me fresh perspective on my historic house and collections; refreshed my enthusiasm for my job; helped me re-connect with why we preserve history and tell stories; and helps me re-train my staff!”
In the next phase of this series, our three presenters will lead webinars for long distance learners:

Heritage Spotlight: Fred J. Johnston Museum
The Federal style clapboard house was built circa 1812 as the residence for John Sudam (1782-1835), a prominent attorney, New York State Senator and Regent. In the 1880s, it was sold to the Van Leuven family, whose descendants decided in 1938 to sell the house for commercial use. Fred J. Johnston, a local antiques dealer was able to purchase the house, and save the site from becoming a gas station. He devoted the remainder of his life to restoring the property and preserving the Federal style exterior details. Under his stewardship, the house attained historic landmark status in the Stockade National Historic District of uptown Kingston. Johnston used the site as both his home and showroom for a successful trade in American decorative arts. When he died in 1993, he handed the stewardship of the property to the Friends of Historic Kingston.

Project Spotlight: Berme Road Park Revitalization Plan
The Town of Wawarsing and Village of Ellenville was awarded a Community Planning Grant to create a site plan and itemized engineers' estimates for needed
improvements to Berme Road Park recommended by the Ellenville/Wawarsing Joint Parks Commission. These improvements form the basis for revitalizing the park as a gateway to the O&W Rail Trail, Ellenville, and Minnewaska State Park. Berme Road Park is located on the east side of Ellenville's downtown area and is the village's major park.
The park includes tennis courts, a basketball court, a baseball field, and a playground to meet the recreational needs of Ellenville's 4,131 residents, and also draws users from the surrounding Town of Wawarsing and other areas in Ulster County.
The future right-of-way of the O&W rail trail passes through the
park. In short, the park is ideally situated to be a connection point and gateway for three
important regional assets: Ellenville's increasingly vibrant downtown, the O&W Rail Trail,
