CLINICAL CORNER -  New Jersey State Nurses Support Multi-State Nursing Compact

On Friday, July 19, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed a bill approving state's participation in the multi-state Nurse Licensure Compact, becoming the 34th state to join the NLC. The implementation date is still to be determined.

The New Jersey State Nurses Association (NJSNA) is in full support of the multi-state nursing compact, which allows more portability of nurses that will improve access to care for patients. "New Jersey did not initially go into the compact because the initial compact requirements were not as strict as ours, there were concerns that other states did not have the standards for vetting a nurse that New Jersey has," said Benjamin Evans, DD, DNP, RN, APN, president NJSNA. "The compact requirements have been elevated to include fingerprinting and background checks that New Jersey requires of its nurses. Now that this has been done, we are in support of it."

This year's World Breastfeeding Week slogan is 
"Empower Parents, Enable Breastfeeding"



World Breastfeeding Week begins each year on August 1 and runs right through until August 7.  Set every August for the first seven days of the month, World Breastfeeding Week aims to highlight the huge benefits that breastfeeding can bring to both the health and welfare of babies, as well as a wider push for maternal health, focusing on good nutrition, poverty reduction and food security.

The event organized every year by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), a global network that aims to protect, promote and support breastfeeding around the world, works with the World Health Organization and Unicef to get its aid to the right people in the right communities.

This year's World Breastfeeding Week slogan is "Empower Parents, Enable Breastfeeding".

The #WBW2019 slogan was chosen to be inclusive of all types of parents in today's world. Focusing on supporting both parents to be empowered is vital in order to realize their breastfeeding goals.
Empowerment is a process that requires evidence-based unbiased information and support to create the enabling environment where mothers can breastfeed optimally. Breastfeeding is in the mother's domain and when fathers, partners, families, workplaces, and communities support her, breastfeeding improves.
We can all support this process, as breastfeeding is a team effort. To enable breastfeeding we all need to protect, promote and support it.

Psoriasis, an autoimmune disease, affects the lives of 7.5 million Americans, or 2.2 percent of the population. Around the globe, the disease affects 125 million people, and 10 to 30 percent of the global population develops psoriatic arthritis. Additionally, psoriasis disproportionately affects more Caucasians than any other race, reports the  National Psoriasis Foundation . August is  Psoriasis Awareness Month .

Gastroparesis Awareness Month


August is Gastroparesis Awareness Month. IFFGD works to focus attention on important health messages about gastroparesis diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life issues. The goals include improving understanding of gastroparesis to help patients and families manage the condition, and encouraging preventive strategies.

With sponsorship by IFFGD, Gastroparesis Awareness Month was listed on the U.S. National Health Observances Calendar* beginning in 2016.

Creamy Corn Chowder

INGREDIENTS
8 ears of corn
2 Parmesan rinds (about 4 ounces; optional)
4 ounces shiitake mushrooms, stems removed and reserved, caps cut into ¼-inch pieces
2 sprigs thyme
1 bay leaf
Kosher salt
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature, divided
Freshly ground black pepper
¼ cup dry white wine
4 ounces thick-cut bacon, cut into ¼-inch pieces
1 pound russet potatoes, peeled, cut into ½-inch pieces
3 shallots, thinly sliced
1 medium leek, white and pale-green parts only, quartered lengthwise, thinly sliced
2 garlic cloves, finely grated
2 Fresno chiles, seeded, finely chopped
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups heavy cream
1 tablespoon chopped marjoram
Chopped parsley and crushed oyster crackers (for serving)
 
RECIPE PREPARATION
  • Cut kernels from cobs and place in a large bowl. 
  • Place cobs in a medium pot and add Parmesan rinds(if using), mushroom stems, thyme, bay leaf, 2 tsp. salt, and 8 cups water. 
  • Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until broth is fragrant and reduced by half, 40-50 minutes. 
  • Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into a medium bowl; discard solids and set broth aside.
  • Meanwhile, heat 4 Tbsp. butter in a large heavy pot over medium-high. 
  • Add corn kernels, season generously with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, until corn is tender and juices have evaporated and browned on the bottom of the pot, 12-15 minutes. 
  • Reserve ½ cup corn for serving; transfer remaining corn to a medium bowl.
  • Add wine to pot and cook, scraping up browned bits, until liquid is syrupy, about 2 minutes. Scrape into bowl with remaining corn. 
  • Heat remaining 1 Tbsp. butter in same pot over medium and cook bacon until golden brown and fat has rendered, about 6 minutes. 
  • Add potatoes, shallots, leek, garlic, and chopped mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables have softened but haven't taken on any color, 12-15 minutes. 
  • Add chiles and cook until fragrant and softened, about 3 minutes. 
  • Stir in flour and cook until nutty and fragrant, about 1 minute. 
  • Add reserved broth, bring to a boil, and cook, stirring occasionally, until potatoes are fork-tender, 10-15 minutes. 
  • Add cream and corn mixture and cook, stirring, until chowder has thickened, 5-10 minutes. 
  • Remove from heat and stir in marjoram. Let sit 15 minutes before serving.
  • Divide chowder among bowls. Top with parsley, oyster crackers, and reserved ½ cup corn; season with pepper.
