How can it possibly be August already? Where did the summer go? Oh right, it was all those days of hiding inside or in the water because of 90 degree weather with 90 percent humidity. Whew! Thank goodness summer's almost over.
This summer's been a blast at the library so far and it's not slowing down. The Youth Services Department will continue story times throughout the month of August, including Pool Side Story Time and Saturday Story Times. A program about craters, and how they are created, will help jump start kids for school. Kids will also get to participate in a new Craft Club on Thursday afternoons. Check out the library calendar for more fun youth programs.
Teens have a fantastic lineup of programs this month. In addition to the monthly T.A.G. meeting, the library will also host a sewing program (registration is required), a comic book convention, the monthly game night, and a back-2-school vision boards event during which teens can map out their paths to success for the new school year. Though Chess Club is going to be taking a break in August, don't forget to attend the Chess Championship Annual Game with Livingston. This year the event will be held in Livingston on August 8.
While lots of people try to sneak in an end of summer trip, the Adult Services Department is hosting a couple of programs you won't want to miss. This month's book discussion covers
The Year of Living Danishly: Uncovering the Secrets of the World's Happiest Country,
a memoir, by Helen Russell. Summer programming will end with the ever popular Mr. Joe Fagan, the town historian, who will give a presentation The Township of West Orange Then and Now on Thursday, August 15.
Last month the library hosted several youth services programs, including A Universe of Music, Science Story Tellers, weekly story times, and a local author visit. Teens had an open mic night, spelling bee, gaming tournament, and Harry Potter celebration. Adults had several programs covering topics from astrology to gravity and planetary motion to clearing clutter and finally last, but definitely not least, two programs done in conjunction with the Town Health Department on healthy aging. So ultimately, the new air conditioning unit, was not the brightest star of July...but it may have been Sirius. Have a great remainder of the summer!
Did you know?
The expression "the dog days of summer" is in reference to Sirius, the hunter Orion's dog. According to History.com ancient Greeks tracked the hottest point of the year to that when the star Sirius was at its brightest. Traditionally "the dog days of summer" are July 3-August 11 in the United States.
