Nevada GEAR UP Digest
August 2020

August 19, 2020

With students returning to school in the upcoming weeks, we are constantly reminded that we are currently living in a world of great change.

In this issue, we introduce new and returning GEAR UP NV staff members, as well as a few details for the new Nevada GEAR UP State Grant program. Although technically, the new  grant began last September. Year two begins on August 23rd. This second year of the grant will be the first year we will be working with students in 7th-12th grades.

Enjoy the end of your summer, and we hope you have a wonderful start to the new school year!
Welcome! covid
In this issue, we are happy to welcome Nicola Opfer and Andrea Saavedra to our staff as First-Year College Advisors for NSC and UNR, respectively.

Nicola Opfer is a Las Vegas native and graduated from Nevada State College May of 2020.She received her Bachelor's degree in both Communication with a Public relations concentration and Psychology. During her time at NSC, she was  the 2 term serving student body president (NSSA)  from 2018-2020 and Nevada Student Alliance (NSA) Chair for NSHE from 2019-2020. Under her leadership, she was able to create scholarships, bring free menstrual products on campus, lead the way on bringing both a student lounge and basketball court to the campus, and always advocated for the students. Which led to her new passion of student success! She believes that together we can help students reach their fullest potential and find their own path. Her "door" is always open whenever needed. For fun: Nicola enjoys trying new foods, playing with her two cats, and drinking coffee.

Andrea Saavedra is a first-generation college graduate, TRiO Scholar and Upward Bound Alum. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in Spanish Language and Literature and International Affairs from the University of Nevada, Reno, and is from rural Nevada (GO VAQUEROS).
Andrea loves Latin American music, food and culture. She studied Abroad in Costa Rica and had the opportunity to visit Nicaragua and Panama, and is happy to be returning as a GEAR UP First-Year College Advisor for the new grant.
