Late Fall Harvest

Now's a good time to plant some late fall harvest seedlings.

Late summer planting is something we should do more often. Some of the veggie seedlings that you can plant between late June and mid-August are brussel sprouts, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower.

Fall is the perfect time to plant garlic. Use a soil thermometer to ensure the temperature is 60° and at a depth of four inches before planting garlic.

Plant of the Month: Let's Talk Garlic

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species of bulbous flowering plant in the onion genus Allium.
It is a relative to the onion, shallot, leek, chive, Welsh onion and Chinese onion.
There is soft neck garlic and hardneck garlic -- and hundreds of varieties.
One bulb can contain 20-30 cloves and grows approximately 3 feet high.
Is pollinated by bees, butterflies, moths and other insects.
It is native to Central Asia and northeastern Iran.
It is grown widely in Canada and used in many different dishes.
It was known to ancient Egyptians and has been used as both a food flavouring and a nutrient-rich addition to any diet.
Eating garlic provides many health benefits, including improved immune function.
Garlic is loaded with vitamins and minerals like manganese, selenium, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and other antioxidants, including allicin.

Did you know?

It can be grown in Alaska.
China produces 76% of the world's supply of garlic.
