Continuing the Quest
Alumni recently had the opportunity to participate in the latest installment of Continuing the Quest. A program designed to pair advice-seekers with expert advice-givers, Continuing the Quest gives participants the chance to discover something new through enlightening professional development talks. During our most recent program alumnus Avishar Barua '05, executive chef and general manager of Service Bar and one of 15 world-class chefs on Bravo's recent "Top Chef" Season 18, led a virtual cooking demonstration of Murgir Jhol (Bengali homestyle chicken curry) while answering questions posed by his former teacher Pat Hogan.
If you have ideas for future topics to cover in the Continuing the Quest series, have recommendations for expert panelists or would like to share your professional advice with fellow alumni, please email Director of Alumni Relations Melissa Clarke Beckett at beckettm@columbusacademy.org.

School News
Last spring, Columbus Academy upper-schoolers took 568 Advanced Placement (AP) exams, the highest number in school history. As a result of their hard work and achievement, 107 of our students have been named AP Scholars for 2021, including 55 AP Scholars with Distinction (for earning an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken with scores of 3 or higher on at least 5 of them) and 15 AP Scholars with Honor (average score of at least 3.25 on all exams with scores of 3 or higher on at least 4). Of this year's AP Scholars, 12 are rising juniors and 45 are rising seniors. The College Board discontinued the State AP Scholar designation in 2020. Had it still been awarded this year, Hanrui Xu from our Class of 2021 would have been an incredibly strong candidate for that honor after earning perfect scores of 5 on 13 different exams. The highest average was earned by his classmate Hannah Clay, who averaged 4.88 over 8 exams, making her one of 22 Academy students who took at least 8 different AP Exams this year.

Sports News
Our boys golf team, which has won four-straight state titles, was invited to participate in the National High School Golf Association Invitational at Pinehurst in North Carolina this summer. Out of 46 state champion teams from 37 different states, our Vikings finished 14th overall with team scores of 318 on Course 8, 320 on Course 9 and 319 on Course 7. More recently they won the MSL-Ohio preseason tournament with junior Stephen Ma, who was the individual state champion last year, claiming medalist honors with a 73 at Westchester Golf Course.
|
Not to be outdone, our girls also won their Mid-State League preseason tourney for the first time in program history. Leading the way were juniors Grace Luo (84), Eva Baker (86), Eliza Freytag (90) and Quinn Black (99) as their team score of 359 was 10 strokes better than runner-up CSG in the event at Turnberry that included a dozen schools.
