Alumni Spotlight
Summer Story Time
As we do every summer we ask our alumni to send in their memories of a room or place at North. Pictured below is a room created in the mid 90's and was there until the school moved to Cranberry. So what memories can you share about this space? Send those stories to us here.
The picture is the TV studio that was put together in the mid 90's to broadcast the morning announcements over the school's closed circuit TV system. In the spring of 1993, Whittle Communications installed over 25 televisions through the classrooms at North. The system was free with the proviso that the school would broadcast a 12 minute national newscast geared for teens everyday.

In November of 1993, the school's PA system broke down and repairs, because of the age of the system, were going to take some time. Senior Todd Crusham came up with the idea to broadcast the announcements over the closed circuit system and thus was born NCTV.
The first announcements were read by Sarah Davitt ('95). Music was added when Robb Duty would lie under the table with a cassette recorder to play the selection of the day.

From that first day until the end of the school year in June of 2013, morning announcements were taped and played back to the student body. It became one of the more popular student activities at North as people signed up to be announcers. The picture shows the studio in 2013. By then there were multiple cameras, teleprompters, titlemakers and microphones. During the life of the studio there were many shows that were produced by the students. To name a few there was a Christmas show where students answered questions about their worst gift, favorite Christmas movie and of course Santa Claus. There were commercials for school dances and sporting events, a sports talk show called Phat Guys on Sports, a version of MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch featuring the faculty, and the very popular Friday morning dance party where students would jam the studio and dance wildly as the credits rolled.

When the school schedule changed and Mr Walter Quinn retired, the morning announcement show ended, but students had a good time during its 20 year existence.
While this month's picture isn't of the best quality, it is still recognizable. It first came into existence in 1963 and was decorated in 1999. Where is it and what kind of stories can you tell us about it. Send those stories here.

Flashback Photo

Last Month's Flashback
This is a picture from the 1992 yearbook. The group of young men are all freshmen, the future class of 1995. What they have in common is they are all named Mike (Biertempfel, Cunic, Dlugonski, Fuchs, Lavsa, Lucas, Makepeace, Paine, Pegher, Petitta, Quinn, Reese, Roos, and Villiani) Mike was the most popular boys name for freshmen that year. The yearbook staff also noted that there were six boys named John, and three named James. Melissa, Lisa and Natalie were the most popular girls names with four and there were three Kimberly's in the freshman class.

A check of the first names of the incoming freshman class (2025) shows a big change from 30 years ago - there is only one Mike in the class and none of the names listed for the class of 1994 was listed more than twice The top boys names were Justin, Ryan, Nathan, Andrew, and Zachary. The top girls names were Julia, Isabella, Emma, and Kaitlyn.

Sarah Davitt Gilbertson ('95) said "HOCKEY TEAM!" I remember these characters." Sorry Sarah.

Jim Seelman ('94) said, "they are all named Mike."

Robert Colville ('84) said, "I don't know who they are, but what they have in common is that they all, apparently, know the answer."

This Month's Flashback
If you have been paying attention, this should be easy. Who are these guys and just what are they doing?

In the 2009-2010 school year, Mr. Stutz was in charge of discipline at North. Mr. Quinn took over teaching Creative Writing I and II. Following Mr. Stutz's lesson plans, he had the seniors write letters to themselves in the future - in the year 2020 to be exact. Mr. Quinn's plan was to hand them out at the 10-year reunion. Covid ended those plans. Mr. Quinn still has the letters and would like to get them to the class since there doesn't seem to be any signs of a class reunion. So if you took Creative Writing and would like to see what you wrote to yourself 10 (now 11) years ago, click here and send him your name and address.

Scholarship News
Military Legacy Scholarship

North Catholic has a Military Legacy Scholarship in honor of all alumni who have served in our nation’s military forces. The goal is to provide a $1,000.00 scholarship annually. To date we have raised over $30,000 to fund this annual scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to the student provided certain benchmarks are met. Every 4 years (or sooner) it is awarded to an incoming 9th grade student.

If you wish, you may make a contribution in someone's honor/memory. Donations can be made by sending checks payable to North Catholic, write "North Catholic Military Scholarship" in the memo, and mail to:

The John Latulippe Memorial Scholarship

The John Latuilippe Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Gabriel Grindstaff NC class of 2024. Thank you to all who have donated.

Class of 1959 Scholarship

The NCHS Class of 1959 Scholarship Fund has awarded $4,600 Scholarships for the 2020-21 School Year to Brianna Venturella and Rosemary Kenney.

The Fund has awarded scholarships totaling $73,000 to nine recipients since the inception of the Fund.  Contributions to the Fund can be made at any time and should be sent to the North Catholic Foundation, North Catholic High School, ATTN: Class of 1959 Scholarship Fund, 1617 Route 228, Cranberry Township, PA 16066.

If you would like more information about the Fund, please contact Joe Blitzko (joeyblitz@aol.com), Dick Halleran (rhalleran@verizon.net), or Mike Conroy (conroy1603@gmail.com).

Class of 1965 Legacy Scholarship

The Class of 1965 Legacy Scholarship continues to grow. To date, our classmates have raised over $35,000 in donations and pledges. Special shout out goes to ART MURPHY for his donation of $10,000. A big thank you to JOE MCKELVEY and DAN WOLOVICH for their generous donations this month.

The award for the 2020-2021 school year have been made to sophomores Thomas Zizan and Kaitlyn Kenaan. They are children of NC alums Dan Kenaan ('91) and Julie Rogalla ('87) and received $1,000 to help with tuition. Both students were on the first semester high honor roll.

We need the help of our classmates to grow the scholarship fund. If we can get more of our classmates to step up and help keep our legacy scholarship fund growing, there is no end to what the money can do to help a student to get the great education that North provided to us and continues to do so today. No contribution is too small. If you have questions, feel free to contact Bob Colbert (bobcolbert@comcast.net) or Walt Quinn (quinn.walter@comcast.net)

Thanks also to classmates WAYNE BYERLY and DENNY CRIBBINS for committing to making a monthly donation. JOHN MIKULAN is the latest classmate to set up a monthly contribution. They join a number of fellow classmates including Wayne Young, Walt Quinn, and Bob Colbert who have been making a small monthly donation for the past three years that is put on their credit card. As Bob said, "it's less that the cost of a bottle of wine." If you would like to contribute a small monthly amount via your credit card, contact Amber Nicotra Morrison to set it up.

John Mikulan is also donating 20% of the royalties from his book, The Bark of the Day to the fund.

Kathy Monti Memorial Scholarship

Kathy Hickey Monti's limitless love and passion for helping others was apparent to everybody she met.  Her pride for North Catholic began in 1973, when her high school closed and she enrolled in the first co-ed class at North as a junior. Kathy led the charge to keep her school's basketball team together. As a standout guard and the very first team captain of North's first women's basketball program, Kathy and her fellow Trojanettes began a women's basketball dynasty that is alive and continues to thrive today. Following her graduation from North in 1975, Kathy played basketball in college and served as team captain and leader. Soon, she was recruited to come back to North and take on the role of Assistant Basketball Coach for the girl's team and with Coach Don Barth, her mentor, friend and former coach, led them to win multiple state championships. When North opened in Cranberry Township, Kathy continued to volunteer her time at the new school that she loved so dearly until her last breath. In 2017, just before her death, Kathy was voted unanimously into the North Catholic Hall of Fame. Kathy will long be remembered for her impact on hundreds of lives as a teacher, an assistant basketball coach and female role model for girls in athletics.

To continue Kathy's legacy and mission in life of helping others, a scholarship has been established in her name. More than $20,000 has already been raised. The purpose of the Kathy Monti Memorial Scholarship is to provide financial support for a young woman who possesses the same leadership qualities that Kathy demonstrated in her life. This year's recipient is Dacia Lewandowski, NC '23.  If you'd like to donate to this scholarship, please click here or checks can be sent payable to North Catholic with "Kathy Monti Scholarship Fund" in the Memo and mailed to North Catholic High School, 1617 Route 228, Cranberry Township, PA 16066.

Special thanks to those who donated to the scholarship recently in memory of Dave Lyons.

NC Class of 1953 Scholarship

Somewhat recently, an ad hoc group of classmates from the NCHS Class of '53 (Charley Goetz, Bob Muth and Reg Urschler), working with the Alumni office, some survivors of deceased classmates, as well as input from other classes who already funded scholarship programs, concluded our class should likewise fund a scholarship program.

In order to do so, a minimum of $25K would be necessary. Additionally, the alumni office advised that our graduating class consisted of 230 graduates. Deduct from that those already called to their eternal reward (103) together with those with whom contact has been lost (30), results in 97 current survivors. Thus $25K from less than 100 survivors would require almost $260 per graduate. Some have already made contributions reducing the necessary amount to a little over $9000. Thus if each surviving classmate could provide around $100, we could achieve the objective. Think of the impact such a Scholarship Fund would have as a legacy for our class.

I believe it was Chester Nimitz during War II stated about the US military in battle "All gave some, but some gave all". I would encourage all to give some. Keep in mind, that a lot of small drops fill the bucket.

Wishing all best regards,
 Vince Brogan, NC ‘53

Military Alumni
Thanks to many of you, our list of alumni who have served in our nation's military services has grown to almost 1,500. We thank all of you who have taken the time to help us with this endeavor. Perhaps you have noticed that recently an asterisk has been added next to name of more than two dozen individuals on the list. This indicates the individual died while in the military, either Killed in Action or a non-battle death. There may be more alumni who died while serving. If you know of someone that should have the asterisk added next to their name please let us know. We will always appreciate your efforts to help us update this honor roll of our alumni.

Thank you to all of our alumni for their service to our country!

North Catholic Class of 2021

In the Classroom

The second floor in the academic wing has been completed and is ready for the start of the 2021-22 school year.

****
Congratulations to the North Catholic team and their coach/teacher Mr. Malone who competed on this year’s Hometown High Q. They finished second in the finals of this year’s multi-round quiz bowl show.

****
From July 13th-16th, North Catholic had four students attend the Marianist Summer L.I.F.E. Central Retreat. Due to Covid concerns the retreat was not held at the Bergamo Retreat Center in Dayton, OH. Instead, there was a hybrid model of both in person and virtual sessions. Students were able to meet at their own schools in person and then participated in mixed "Marianist Life Communities" and large group sessions via Zoom. The students were able to participate in adoration, confession, and service work. The students helped remove some of the remaining leftover Covid signage, tidied the Marian grotto, and helped set up classrooms for the new school year. The four students that were commissioned on retreat were John Garbalinski '23, Katherine Riley '23, Joseph Harmanos, '23 and Anna Cantella '22. Eric and Maria Campbell were the moderators.

Trojan Sports

The 2020-2021 school year was a great year athletically for the Trojans individually and as a team. From the team standpoint, North won WPIAL titles in girls soccer, girls volleyball, and girls cross country. The boys track team took home the title in the 400 meter relay. Both the Trojans and Trojanettes finished second in basketball as did the boys volleyball team.
There were plenty of individual titles as well. Trevor Paschall won WPIAL gold in the 100, 200, and 400 meter races as well as being part of the 400 meter relay team. Trevor was also the PIAA state champion in the 200 meter race. Nicolas Scheller took home WPIAL gold in tennis. In swimming Brittany Carmazzi was the WPIAL championship in the 100 meter butterfly while Maggie Foley was the WPIAL diving championship.

All of these accomplishments earned North Catholic the Class 3A Trib Cup from the Tribune Review.

Trojan Basketball

Mr. Jim Rocco was named as the next Head Boys Basketball Coach of North Catholic High School.

Coach Rocco brings a wealth of high school coaching experience to our Boys Basketball Program. He coached at Penn Hills from 1989-2015 guiding his team to the 2004 PIAA 4A Championship and the 2003 WPIAL 4A Championship, among many other impressive playoff runs. Coach Rocco then took the position at Penn Trafford where he coached from 2015-2020. He guided his team to three WPIAL 6A playoff appearances. Most recently, Coach Rocco was the Assistant Varsity Boys Basketball Coach here at North Catholic, where he was able to enjoy watching his daughter, Alayna (’24), start for the Trojanettes.
Planned Giving
Planned giving is a wonderful way to prepare for the day we depart this life and enter into God's kingdom. By planning ahead, you can provide opportunities to young men and women by supporting North Catholic. Planned giving allows us to help continue the work of Christ and pass on our traditions and Catholic Marianist values. Gifts can be specified in one's will as either a dollar amount of a stated percentage of one's estate. A growing number of alumni have taken this step and discovered a great sense of joy and satisfaction that they are helping families. If you are interested in finding out more, please click here or contact Amber Nicotra Morrison in the Development Office at amorrison@northcatholic.org.
