BOOK OF THE MONTH, AUGUST 2021

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Who was Betty Collier? Who were the first pioneers to settle on Marco Island? In 1870, the Colliers settled on Marco Island.
Follow the journey of William and Betty Collier from North Carolina to Cedar Key, Florida and on to Marco Island. The reason they settled on a deserted island may become clear. Mr. Thorpe, a surveyor described the island and Henderson Creek area as "a pond full of monstrous alligators surrounded by a cypress swamp: impractical."

About The Author

As a Victorian re-enactor for nearly 20 years, Barbara Ann Malta was asked to portray Betty Collier. She was given her birth and death dates and access to William Thomas Collier's diary. From diary entries, research about and general knowledge of Victorian women, Barbara gave Betty her voice in the form of this historic narrative, based on events in her life and in the lives of pioneer women

LEGAL SHORTS
Contract mumbo-jumbo is scary and boring, but inattention can hurt you. Look for this sentence and say NO: “this agreement is for the term of your copyright and any extensions thereof”. Why? It means they can use your copyright for your whole life and for 70 years after you die. Bad idea.

WRITING EXERCISE CHALLENGE!
Members, are you up for it?

Build your writing muscle through flash fiction [a tiny story]. MIW members who attended July’s meeting are on their way to building their writing muscle. How about you? Receiving a random prompt from our presenter, Pauline Hayton, at our last meeting, we each picked a genre we don’t typically write about and spent 15 minutes scribbling out the first story sparked by the prompt. Interestingly, we all had a unique story to tell, completely unlike one another’s. Melody went home and polished hers. That story ended up being just under 200 words for a total investment of under one hour! AND NOW . . . you can submit to MIW Anthology too, using Pauline’s prompt for a version of your own.

A sample of Melody’s prompted story is here CLICK HERE-SAMPLE STORY

Polish your flash fiction stories from our last meeting.
OR
Use the same prompt we all used at the meeting and submit a new version.   PROMPT-CLICK HERE
OR
If you weren’t at the meeting use the prompt to craft your own version.

Please submit by September 25 to the anthology committee. jweckelman@gmail.com. Be sure to note ‘Flash Fiction Submittal’ in the Subject line. Several will be chosen to appear in the anthology. ALL will be reviewed and returned with suggestions for you to apply more polish and resubmit for publication in the anthology, if you wish, or just keep for your personal library.

Melody's best blog recommendation: I’ve read dozens of “how-to-write” books by everyone out there, Janice Hardy has the teaching gift; a knack for making a writing principle simple and clear, providing tons of examples to illustrate her point(s). It’s my go-to when I am trying to understand a concept or need a refresher. Click Here
