A Newsletter for Kansas Educators

August 2021
Door prizes, wine, snacks, and over fifteen exhibitors ready to share their field trip and classroom resources will be waiting for you. The annual Topeka Alliance of Museum Educators (TAME) resource fair is being held at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center 5:00-8:00 p.m., Monday, August 2. The event is free and open to educators 21+. No registration is required. For updates, follow the TAME event on Facebook.
The Kansas Historical Society Education team has launched a new K-12 education YouTube channel. Look for resources to use in your classroom and planning a visit to the Kansas Museum of History and state historic sites. As 2021 is the 200th anniversary of the Santa Fe Trail, we have created a Santa Fe Trail playlist specifically for you. Stay tuned for monthly updates.
Traditional American Indian housing styles reflect the culture and environment of the people who made and lived in them. They illustrate extended family relationships, how communities worked together, and the ability of people to plan and prepare for major projects.

The size of these structures is important to their function, but it can be difficult to visualize. This activity allows students to physically “draw” the footprint of a tipi, bark lodge, grass lodge, or earth lodge to aid in visualizing the structures.
Monarch butterfly populations have declined by close to 90% in the last few decades. These beautiful insects migrate through Kansas during the last two weeks of September, and we are waiting for them!

The Kansas Museum of History and the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center team up each year for the annual monarch butterfly migration. Classes and monarch tagging opportunities offer students an opportunity to serve as citizen scientists as they take part in researching this amazing insect.

Monarch tagging classes may be booked for student groups (K-12) for two-hour sessions on weekdays beginning September 15 through September 29 at the Kansas Museum of History. Cost is $5 per student. Reservations are required. Please call Rachael Rost at 785-368-9137 or email education@topekazoo.org
