Sallie Surface retires after 38-year service with CADA

Martin County Commissioners declare August 22 as Sallie Surface Day



In honor of the nearly four decades of extraordinary service to the families of eastern North Carolina, the Martin County Commissioners approved a resolution in recognition of Sallie Surface and declaring Aug. 22 as Sallie Surface Day in Martin County. The resolution paid tribute to Ms. Surface’s tireless leadership, expansion of CADA’s economic development role, commitment to public service, and the respect that she earned from local, state, and national leaders.

The Big Pop Up had another

successful event in Charlotte!

The Charlotte Area Fund's Big Pop Up helped hundreds of families last month. And with each pop up comes more awareness for community action! We are grateful to have had three representatives - House Rep. Becky Carney, House Rep. Mary Belk, and House Rep. Carolyn Logan - attend our last Big Pop Up so we could showcase all the work CAAs do.

Allison Jennings, CFRE is the new Director of Development for W.A.M.Y. Community Action Agency effective July 12th. “Allison will be a great partner in strengthening the culture of giving for W.A.M.Y. and raising the funds needed to support and expand our programs in the years ahead," said Executive Director, Melissa Soto.

Mountain Projects to help with affordable health insurance for Community Residents


Mountain Projects is assisting community residents obtain health insurance. Those who qualify are households that received at least one week of unemployment during 2021. The deadline to enroll in the health insurance program is August 15th.

NCCAA partners with Sampson County Community on monthly CDC Food Drive


Families of four or fewer received one box of food to go along with a meat item, while families of five of more received two boxes. NCCAA's community impact manager, Elle Evans Peterson attended the event and mentioned "These guys here are doing a really great job of getting into our rural communities and that’s where are focus is, because that is where we find the need is highest and greatest."

Haywood provides support to Families of those affected by Alzheimer's



The Alzheimer's support group in Haywood has reconvened its monthly meetings. The open discussions help families talk about the ways their lives are impacted by dementia and find community with others who have similar experiences.

On August 7th, Kinston Community Health Center (KCHC) will host a resource fair starting at 10 am. The goal is to share available healthcare opportunities and resources in Lenoir and Kinston county. Additionally, free dental screenings, COVID vaccines, and COVID testing will be provided.

What does it take to escape poverty?


The cycle of poverty is never-ending and will not likely to quickly disappear. In 2019, the census reported 34 million Americans living in poverty. The United States is one of the wealthiest countries in the world with a rapidly growing economy, but with about 12% of the total population in poverty, that wealthy façade is contradictory. In 2020, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic forced more Americans into poverty due to job loss. And, even as the economy begins to thrive again, many still struggle to find jobs that pay enough to support their families.
