Pen-to-Paper
The Pen-to-Paper Writers’ group met on August 3, 2021. We were pleased to be able to gather again in the Culpeper County Library Conference Room. We are not able to have an evening meeting because the library will be closing at 5:00 PM.
Ten writers shared their stories and welcomed input from the group. One person told her story with a mock trial transcript, and several writers used poetry. One of the attendees slid humor into his story. Another person wrote a fascinating story about historical real-life characters. The group learned about a touching incident that changed the life of one of our writers.
Pen-to-Pen meets the first Tuesday of every month from 10 AM to noon in the Culpeper County Library Conference room.
StageWorks
At rehearsals, the director, Jessy Mahr filled in for actors who were unable to attend. The cast learned not only their lines but their placement on the stage.
Rehearsals are challenging and fun as they help one another remember their lines. The director and cast members are very supportive of one another. More auditions will be held throughout the year and interested people are encouraged to participate.
Windmore’s Publishing Group
On August 9, the new Publishing Group met for the first time in the Culpeper County Library. Cindy Siira and Sally Humphries are the facilitators. Siira came prepared with information on the steps that need to be taken before deciding on the path to publishing your book. Nine people attended. Everyone asked questions or contributed information about their experience with getting their book printed. It was useful information.

Siira asked if the group wanted to pick a specific topic to address each month or an open agenda. An excellent compromise was having a chosen topic addressed for about 20 minutes followed by an open discussion.

The topic for the September meeting is writing a query letter, and why would you use an agent?

StageWorks
StageWorks wants to thank everyone who has spent time with us this year. In a year unlike any other, we have flourished and brought theatre to a community eager for it. I can only imagine that the interest will go up from here! I appreciate the actors who came to rehearsals and memorized their lines; parents that lent me their children for a few hours on weekends so they could be in a play; members of our community who came to the shows or watched online; and the volunteers (my crew, you know who you are!) who have shown up and shared their passion with us.

A special thanks to all the sponsors and donors who have provided funds to help with productions and equipment. We hope we can depend on your continued support.

Because of everyone involved, the future is bright for StageWorks, and the 2021/22 season will be great!

Music Notes
Piedmont Community Band
Becoming a Band
The Piedmont Community Band has enjoyed continued rehearsals this summer, and we are looking forward to scheduling a concert this fall.

We have had nine rehearsals and one live performance since we returned from our COVID hiatus. In that time, we have gone from a collection of individual musicians to a band. This distinction may not seem important, but there is such a difference. A recording from our second week of rehearsals reflects a group of talented musicians playing in the same room but not quite finding one another. A recording from our August 1 rehearsal reveals that the band members have found each other. Talented players have come together to form an ensemble. We can credit great chemistry in the relationships we’ve formed in and among our sections. We are also greatly indebted to our conductor, Chiara Head. Her knowledge of music and ability to balance the ensemble have brought the musicians together. We are now a band!

If you play a band instrument, or played one in the past, and would like to get back to it, we invite you to join us on Sunday nights from 6:30-8:30 in the sanctuary at Culpeper Baptist Church. We welcome all players from middle school to adult and all abilities from beginner to professional. The supportive environment we’ve created provides opportunities for mentoring and growth.
