2020 Business of the Year Award
The 2020 Business of the Year award goes to Eagle Radio 95.1! Our 2020 Annual Banquet was cancelled due to the pandemic, so we instead honored Owners of Eagle Radio 95.1, Tim and Lindsay Ellis, with their award at the Back to Business Bash that was held here at the Chamber on August 12th.
Eagle Radio is a Chamber Member, During the year of 2020 they demonstrated their Community spirit by hosting virtual live call in song requests during the pandemic as well as partnered with the Wicked Sister for virtual live cooking shows. Tim and Lindsay are always supporting the community, not only through the Chamber, but they have been seen helping with United Way, Lake Superior State, Sault Schools (just to name a few), and Lindsay has even been spotted dressing up for the local children at the Library as Elsa.
Congratulations and Thank You to Tim and Lindsay and their whole staff at Eagle Radio 95.1.
2020 F.M. Mansfield Award
The winner of the 2021 F.M. Mansfield Philanthropic Business Award was War Memorial Hospital. War Memorial Hospital is a good standing member of the Sault Area Chamber of Commerce. They contributed resources to our county in 2020 that were instrumental to us making it through the pandemic. They constantly demonstrate community support, show civic participation and make charitable contributions when the needs arise. Congratulations War Memorial Hospital and thank you for all you do for our community and county!
Accepting the award for War Memorial Hospital is Kevin Kalchik, Chief Financial Officer.
Back to Business Bash
On August 12th, here at the Sault Area Chamber of Commerce we held a "Back to Business Bash" in our front yard. Executive Director Tony Haller presented our two annual awards that are normally passed out at our Annual Banquet in February, but was cancelled due to the pandemic. We had a great turnout of attendees who enjoyed networking with everyone as well as indulging in a pretty impressive taco bar and other tasty treats. The tunes were played during the entire party by Eagle Radio 95.1. It was great to see everyone and kick off our Business After 5 season. The first Business After 5 will be September 16th from 5-7pm at Mid American Title Co. located at 1901 Ashmun St. Sault Ste Marie, MI.
2021 Chamber Challenge
On July 23rd The Sault Area Chamber of Commerce held their annual Chamber Challenge at beautiful Wild Bluff Golf Course. A 9am shot gun start started their day of golfing the 18 holes. We had a total of 96 golfers this year which made for great networking on the greens. Thank you again to all of our sponsors, golfers, and especially to our Premier Sponsor U.P. Engineers and Architects for a fun day on the course!

Ambulance Transfer Update for Community
Local agencies are working together on securing ambulance transportation for patients from our local hospitals to other facilities for additional treatment. Like many industries, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are experiencing staffing shortages across the nation. In addition to low staffing numbers, each ambulance service has an obligation to comply with state and local requirements on protocol such as keeping a certain number of ambulances in the area to support 911 services. These factors as well as others such as long hours, low pay, increased educational requirements, increased costs and low insurance reimbursement rates make it difficult to hire and retain staff. “War Memorial not only contacts our local EMS transfer services, but if they are unavailable we have a list of roughly 15 other services that we will reach out to across the state of Michigan when a transport is needed” said Dr. Kyle Raycraft, EUP Med Control Authority Medical Director. “Due to a state wide shortage of EMS personnel and higher transfer numbers across the state, fewer transportation services are able to help with transfers from War Memorial” David Jahn, President & CEO of War Memorial Hospital added. It was noted by Jahn that flight crews are utilized when available, but adverse weather and insurance restrictions limit the availability of this option in some situations. Local agencies are committed to finding solutions to the current problem. “The goal of all organizations involved is to get each patient the care that they need in a timely manner and we are doing everything we can to make that happen” said Scott LaBonte, Sault Ste. Marie Fire Chief. “EMS would like to see higher reimbursement rates, support from local and federal funding” said Renee Gray, Kinross EMS Director. “Collaboration between these agencies would allow us to best utilize available resources” Gray added
