OSU Extension Partnering With Ross Heart Hospital
|
The Franklin County Office of OSU Extension has begun a partnership with the OSU Ross Heart Hospital to educate cardiac patients about growing and consuming fresh fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy lifestyle. OSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteers (MGV’s) have planted 44 raised beds at Waterman Farm with different types of vegetables and herbs for the project. Each Wednesday evening during the growing season, dieticians and chefs from the Ross Hospital teach a cooking lesson and demonstration in the Extension Office demonstration kitchen on how to prepare healthy foods using produce from the garden.
After the cooking demonstration, participants visit the vegetable garden where Master Gardener Volunteers help them harvest fresh vegetables and herbs which they take home to prepare for their family. Master Gardeners also show participants how they can grow their own vegetables at home.

Two 4-H Special Interest (SPIN) Clubs are taking place at the Homeless Families Foundation this summer. The first is a 4-H garden SPIN Club taught by Franklin County Master Gardener volunteers. The program has been in place every summer for a number of years at the Foundation, but is also held at four additional Franklin County afterschool programs each year. Youth in the program learn about many aspects of gardening, and make salsa from garden produce as their capstone project.
The other program being held is a 4-H polar SPIN Club, held in partnership with the Byrd Polar Climate Change and Research Center at Ohio State. Although the club has been held virtually the past two years, this is the first time that it is in person. Youth are learning about the polar regions through mapping and experiential activities such as making flubber to simulate retreating icebergs. It was great to be back in person at the Franklin County Fair. The week of the fair was full of smiles, livestock shows, horse shows, still project judging, etc. At the end of the week, we had judged more than 1,595 projects. We're pleased to share that 185 youth are representing Franklin County 4-H at the Ohio State Fair. As of August 5th, we have had twenty-nine youth receive either Outstanding of the Day or a Clock Trophy. Check out the Franklin County 4-H Facebook page for pictures of the youth in action. Say Goodbye to #Quarantine15!
|
Our Family and Consumer Sciences Educator Jenny Lobb launched a new partnership with the Hilliard Food Pantry last month. Jenny offered a webinar titled “Say Goodbye to #Quarantine15!” and had 16 individuals affiliated with the pantry register for the class. The week of the webinar, pantry staff assembled and delivered at-home meal kits to eligible registrants who provided an address. The meal kits contained ingredients to make a vegetable frittata from Celebrate Your Plate. A recording of the webinar is available to view HERE. Jenny is looking forward to offering more healthy cooking classes, either virtual or hands-on, for the Hilliard Food Pantry in the future!
