President's Comments
As we start our new garden club year, I hope you are as excited as I am with the many great events and programs in the planning process. This has been one of the wettest summers in many years. It is once again raining as I write this. My vegetable garden grew but has produced few vegetables. Some of my herbs died from too much water. Hopefully, I will have much better results with my fall garden.
Over the summer months, the garden center has undergone several improvements. The auditorium has been painted a light gray, along with the foyer. The baseboards were repainted white. Later this month, the foyer will have a new look: furniture, curtains and a rug. The bathrooms were repainted. Our glass doors are not up to code and some need repairs. We are working on replacing them. Our building is aging (just like we are) and improvements must be made to keep it looking good if we want to keep renting it. Rental fees are used for the upkeep on the building, utilities, office expenses, etc. It also provides our circles a meeting place at no charge.
Several of our events will return next year after an absence of several years:
-
The Ed Series will return on February 14, 2023
-
The Secret Garden Tour will return on May 20-21, 2023
-
The Tour of Tables Preview Night will be March 14; Luncheon, March 15, 2023
New on our calendar is a Meet and Greet Tea for the new Florida Federation of Garden Clubs President, Tina Tuttle. This will be on April 28, 2023. More on this at a later date.
I hope you will call the chairman of one of the above events and volunteer to help.
They say it takes a village to raise a child. It takes a club to make an event successful.
If you have any questions, concerns or comments, please call, text or email me.
As always, stay healthy and safe.
Hugs!!
Sandra

Circle Program Directors
Deanna Gordon, chair of the Fair Flower Show, has an offer for you! Rather than enlist an outside speaker, why not plan a (semi) private visit to the flower show at the Fair? Of course, we count on PFGC members to volunteer to hostess during Fair hours, but we will also extend an offer to circles to visit before the Fair opens on Tuesday, October 25, between the hours of 10 am – 3 pm. Please contact Deanna at (850)293-1540 or dkwgordon@gmail.com to make arrangements.

Needed: Office Volunteers
As circumstances change for those members who volunteer their time to work in the office, we find ourselves in need of seeking new volunteers. Helping doesn't mean a lifetime dedication--just 10 am-2 pm on a couple of Mondays or Fridays each month. Please call the office at (850)432-6095 to express an interest. It's fun, and you'll know you're a vital part of our organization

On Monday, August 22 at 1:00pm in the Garden Center Café is the kick off committee meeting for this fundraising event. Bud 'N' Bloom
The last meeting before we paused for the summer was held at the home of Terry Henry, with 11 members in attendance. While waiting for the rains to abate, a short meeting was held during which new officers were chosen. Bud ’n’ Bloom will be led during the 2022-2023 season by Ann Luther, president; Suzi Matteson, VP; Pat Bush, treasurer; and Susan Fawcett, secretary. During a break in the storms, Terry led us on a tour of her beautiful gardens. This was followed by a delicious pot luck lunch and a pass-a-long plant swap, where we learned about some new and unique plants.
Bernice Reboulet (pictured) had trouble picking just one. Sandra and Rebecca Sherman were awarded a little token of our appreciation for donating not only their time but also food for the TOT Preview night as well as for the PFGC Annual Meeting. Our next meeting will be August 22 at 10:00 am.

Pick N Poke
Our Circle met on June 2, 2022 at the home of Debbie Kay to tour her beautiful backyard garden. Almost everything in her garden was in full bloom. We had lunch at Ruby Tuesdays with an array of desserts following at our President Marilyn Powitzky’s home.
Our latest meeting was held on July 28, 2022 at the Pensacola Garden Center. We had a very informative presentation by an upcoming high school student, named Cole Poston, who loves all plants but especially orchids. He talked to us about orchid care, repotting, how to maintain them over winter, plus watering and fertilizing. He recommends Orchid Blooms Fertilizer and Orchid Plus Fertilizer. The beautiful orchids he brought with him showed his recommendations work. He plans to continue his education in the botanical field.
Afterwards, it was a pizza party for all with salad and desserts too. Thanks to our hostesses Leslie W., Irene C., Marilyn P. and Debbie K.

Pineglades
Three carloads of Pineglades members gathered for our annual field trip, this time to Slay’s Nursery in Elberta and lunch at Wolf Bay Lodge in Fairhope. We enjoyed browsing through the offerings at Slay’s, everything from yard art to hanging baskets to hard-to-find potted plants. Lunch out was an enjoyable novelty. At least one carload continued the jaunt to more nurseries! We happily returned home with hankerings for new plants and good food satisfied. Pictured is Suzanne Wagg’s van cargo full of beautiful plants.

Magnolia
My Little Gems have decided they want to meet year round. Highlights of our summer were a visit to Tarkiln Bayou and a program by Mickie Quigley and an Americorp worker Justin Franks who is receptive to doing talks. His contact # is 850-503-1520. Joining us were a group of German tourists from Stuttgart. We also had Teresa Friday provide us an interactive presentation on Butterflies, A to Z which was a well received change from a traditional program. We are busy putting together our program schedule through next August and are looking for members gardens we can visit Jun 24, Jul 22, and Aug 26. Please contact me if you are willing to share your garden with us next summer.
I am proud to be part of this group who continue to surprise me by stepping forward, and actively participating in our Circle and PFGC events and request for volunteers. Christine Ketnick and Gigi Massingill signed up to be office volunteers. Bryan Gaston and Magnolia are again doing the Pensacola Fair staging and have entered the Club competition. Lynn Manthei is very active overseeing the the upgrades to the garden center. We also are requesting you add Chuck Stander to your prayer list in hopes that his cancer treatments will be a success and chemo will not be necessary. Bryan Gaston is recovering from a lengthy hospitalization. Glenda Young continues to take care of her elderly mother. Lastly, yours truly made her 5th flight up north in 6 months to address family concerns. Despite our medical challenges Magnolia is thriving.
Magnolia is matching the $25 membership incentive offered by District 1 and challenging all other Circles to do the same. A Magnolia member who has never been to a District meeting will be able to attend this fall and I will kick in the transportation!
Our next meeting is Aug 24 at 2pm at the Garden Center. Potential members as well as PFGC members are invited but please RSVP. Deanna Gordon will be explaining the botanical arts entries of the fair schedule.

Sassafras
On Tuesday May 24th, Sassafras Garden Circle met at the lovely East Hill home of member Carolyn Kinne. We toured her beautiful gardens and discussed the many different types of plants she has throughout her landscape. We also enjoyed a tour of the Kinne's attractive 1 bedroom Airbnb. It is beautifully decorated and is nestled among some very old trees. Fourteen (14 ) members were in attendance.
After a two month break, we will be meeting on Sunday, August 21st at Tristan Towers on Pensacola Beach for a Welcome back Tea with our hostess member, Linda Hoffman.
