For this month's neighbor news I decided it would be fun to talk to several of the lovely women in the neighborhood that quilt. Quilting is a very precise activity that requires a lot of skill, creativity, and patience. Enjoy learning about the "hidden" talents of neighbors Darlene Johnson, Beth Hill, and Judy Marshall.
|
Darlene Johnson is relatively “new” to quilting, having taken it up after she retired and took beginning quilting class in Florida in 2013. That same year, Darlene and her husband, Mike, first started spending time in Mountain Glen, having purchased their home the year before. She set aside quilting after that first class, busy with other things and not sure how to proceed. In 2015, she met Judy Marshall, an accomplished quilter, and she was hooked. She began spending time at least once a week through the summer at Judy’s house, learning everything she could. “Judy is definitely my mentor,” says Darlene. “I’ve learned more from her than anyone else.” In the fall/winter, she went back to Amelia Island, where they were living at the time, and took another quilting class at a local quilt shop where she made seven quilts in 7 months. The next summer, she again got together with Judy every chance she got.
Darlene loves color and working with square and rectangular patterns. In addition to pieced quilts, she also enjoys making collage quilts. (Photo, left: Darlene with Blue Chevron Quilt completed October, 2016)

Although Beth Hill's mother and grandmother were both quilters, she didn't really take it up until she moved to New England when Tom was an anesthesia resident at Mass General. I was looking for friends. There she took a beginners quilting class at the local recreation center in Belmont, MA. She also joined the local quilt guild and has been a member of one ever since. One of the most fun adventures Beth has had in quilting was going to "Quilting on the Beach," week-long quilt retreat in Kalua-Kona, Hawaii. An immersive experience with a famous Hawaiian quilt maker, Beth learned needle-turned applique and has since made several hand sewn, Hawaiian quilts.
Beth says, "I've made over 130 quilts of all shapes and sizes, most have been given away as gifts. My granddaughter probably owns the largest number of my quilts, and she has sewn a few with me." Beth is currently a member of the Sandhills Quilt Guild a group of about 90 quilters who will have their bi-annual Quilt Show this September in Pinehurst.

Although I was unable to meet with Judy Marshall in person or get any photos of her with her lovely quilts, no feature on quilters in Mountain Glen would be complete without including her. She has sewn her entire life and has mentored many budding quiltmakers over the years. According to Judy, her mother was a great sewer and she learned a lot from her over the years. Judy loves colors and fabrics and with so many years of sewing under her belt, she has a vast collection of fabrics to choose from when starting a project.
Judy loves traditional-style quilt designs and creates many of her own designs. She especially likes making baby quilts, which she gives away to expecting and new moms she meets at church and in her other comings and goings in the community. While many quilters piece their quilts and then send them out for quilting (which on large pieces requires a special sewing machine called a “long arm”), Judy prefers to do her own quilting.
She inherited a lot of fabrics, ribbons, and lace from her mom, who collected all three. Among Judy’s favorite quilts to make are what she calls “scrappy quilts” made using these sentimental pieces. Pieces made with her vintage family scraps stay in her private collection.
In addition to quilts, Judy makes other craft items such as pot holders, mug rugs, and even stuffed cows.

Kettell Brewery and Taproom
|
On Friday night we attended the first of many farm-to-table dinners hosted by Amos and Kaci Nidiffer, owners of Trosley Farm and Liar's Table. There we had the pleasure of meeting Mark and Yumiko Ralston, owners of Kettell Beerworks in Banner Elk, (pictured, left) and participated in a tasting several of their more popular brews, which were delicious. (Personal favorites of ours that night were Rollcast, a German Kolsch-style ale and Vonderbier, a contemporary Munich-style lager.)
Kettell Beerworks, located in the space previously occupied by Flat Top Brewery, is a family-friendly brewery and taproom in the true German tradition. Designed to be a place where parents, children, and neighbors alike can gather and relax (pets are even welcome on the front porch), Kettell Beerworks serves an array of craft beers they make on premises using pure mountain water. They also serve adult and kid-friendly foods such as hand-thrown pizzas, pretzels, wings, edamame, and more. There are plenty of family-friendly games including shuffleboard, pinball, and board games. Tours of the brewery are available upon request.
Kettell beers can also be found in many locations throughout the state including Total Wine stores, Lowe's Foods Beer Den, Stonewalls, Sorrento's, Bella's, Old Hampton Store, Sugar Mountain Ski Resort, Elk River Golf Club, Grandfather Golf & Country Club, Linville Ridge Country Club, Blowing Rock Market, Peabody's Wine & Beer, and Fred's General Mercantile. For a complete list, visit their website.

One of the many appeals of live music is that no two shows are alike. Even if you see the same artist or group perform multiple times, each experience will be unique.
With so many live music performances every week (Grandfather Winery alone has music four nights a week) it is impossible to list them all here. For further information on each venue, click on the title to go to their website for more details.
