Preview of September Book Groups
|
|
Put your library card to good use and check out all the books on our reading list for September discussion. Many in-person and online literature courses are scheduled throughout the semester. Next month alone offers six different classes as well as two author visits with more to come.
First up in the fall term is BookTalk with Harriet Sobol: The Netanyahus (2021) by Joshua Cohen (11392) on Wednesday, September 7, 2022. Sobol will cover three more carefully chosen novels before the end of the year. Register for all four sessions in the BookTalk Series at once to save $20 off the combined cost.
Marilyn DeRight leads a six-session study of Mrs. Dalloway (1925) by Virginia Woolf (11390) beginning Monday, September 12, 2022. On Thursday, September 22, 2022, Lori Rotskoff will hold a one-day discussion of Under the Skin: Hidden Toll of Racism on American Lives (2022) by Linda Villarosa (11468). She returns the following week for an in-person class on Love Marriage (2022) by Monica Ali (11516) on Wednesday, September 28, 2022.
Thursday, September 29, 2022, promises an all-star literature line-up. At 11 am, Ellen Witchell is introducing a new Catching Up with the Classics series. She begins with Persuasion (1817) by Jane Austen (11384). At the same time, Lori Rotskoff kicks off the next three-week session of Short Stories Live (11418). While assignments in our literature classes consist of pleasure reading, this innovative "no homework" course features live performances of short stories in class by a professional actor before discussion. All students receive copies of the stories being read aloud but are not expected to prepare in advance.

Two of many author visits this season are also slated for that Thursday. The afternoon headliner is Ann Leary, The Foundling (2022) (11435), speaking about her new historical fiction. Set in 1927 in a public asylum founded to sequester "feebleminded women of childbearing age," The Foundling portrays the moral dilemma faced by a young secretary whose loyalty to her brilliant employer, a psychiatrist who had been at the forefront of the women's suffrage movement, is tested by a friend from the past, an inmate seeking to escape from the institution . In the evening, meet Ellen Jovin, Rebel with a Clause: Tales and Tips from a Roving Grammarian (2022) (11510) for an entertaining recounting of her favorite grammar adventures and answers to all pressing questions on proper sentence structure.
From single session book discussions to multi-session courses with a unifying theme, the catalog provides varied choices for different literary tastes and schedules. Find your niche and register now!
