A message from Charles Dunlap, Indiana Bar Foundation President & CEO
July marked the beginning of the Indiana Bar Foundation’s new fiscal year. As we turn the page to a new fiscal year, one of our annual duties is to thank our outgoing volunteer board and committee members and onboard new ones. The Foundation has been extremely fortunate to have some of the most dedicated volunteers passionate about our mission of increasing access to the civil legal assistance and expanding civic education opportunities for all Hoosiers. Without the work of these volunteer leaders, there literally would not be an Indiana Bar Foundation. This past year the Foundation volunteers donated more than 1,200 hours of their time to support our mission. These individuals decided that it is vital to take a few hours of their time to serve as a judge at a We the People or High School Mock Trial competition or spend time helping a fellow Hoosier through a legal issue. Other volunteers have decided that the work of the Foundation is significant enough that they are willing to be part of the governing board and committees that serve as the crucial core of the organization. Each of these volunteers embodies the noble ideals of civic virtue that our country, state, and profession cherish. If you are interested in joining this group of volunteers and demonstrating your civic virtue, we always have opportunities that can fit any schedule! Feel free to send me a note (cdunlap@inbf.org) to let us know of your interest. We will be thrilled to have you join us!

Development
Again this summer, the Foundation was fortunate to have intern Deion Ziwawo return to work alongside our staff. We wish Deion all of the best as he returns to IU and continues his studies towards a legal career. Deion was kind enough to share the following thoughts on his experience.

My internship at the Indiana Bar Foundation was truly life-changing and a perfect starting point for my long-term goal of becoming a lawyer. I first interned following the summer of my freshman year at Indiana University and returned this summer because I had such a worth-while experience the first time around. I was able to gain real-life exposure into the legal profession with my work and with the people I was able to connect with. I had the privilege of interacting with prominent figures in the legal community, such as Indiana Supreme Court Justices and United States District Court judges, and on various committees within the Foundation. I would have never been able to immerse myself in experiences such as visiting the Indiana Statehouse to hear Oral Arguments in front of the Indiana Supreme Court or visiting the Federal Courthouse and having one one conversations with judges had I not worked at the Foundation. At I was not just some intern who fetched coffee and did mindless tasks, but rather felt like an integral part of the team. The team brought me in and treated me like I was important; something that can be rare to find in internships at this level of my studies. I have enjoyed the friendships and connections I was able to make at the IBF and look forward to continuing them. This internship was valuable for many things, but above all, it taught me more about myself and what I wish to accomplish in my future.
