On Tuesday, September 6, Lake Superior State University is participating in 906 Day, which is a very special day set aside to celebrate the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This year we hope to raise $5,000 in support of the Anchor Advantage program from Tuesday, September 6 through Saturday, September 10. More details on how you can support will be shared soon.

Lake Superior State University is seeking proposals for its fifth TEDxLSSU event, to be held in the Shouldice Library on March 22, 2023. LSSU students, staff, community members, and beyond are welcome to apply as a speaker. The theme for TEDxLSSU 2023 is “Identity”; potential speakers should submit proposals that explore innovative ideas worth sharing connected to this larger concept.

LSSU President Dr. Rodney S. Hanley said, “I am excited that we are bringing TEDxLSSU back on campus for the first time since the pandemic. This event showcases the university’s commitment to celebrate the uniqueness of the campus and region. TEDxLSSU is a prime example of the benefits of having a university in your community as it provides an excellent space to bring diverse voices and communities together to explore ideas worth sharing.” Read More.

U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) – along with Lake Superior State University President Dr. Rodney S. Hanley, U.S. Coast Guard Assistant Commandant for Response Policy Rear Admiral Jo-Ann Burdian, and Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Don Gerrie – participated in the official ribbon-cutting ceremony of the U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes Center of Expertise at Lake Superior State University’s Center for Freshwater Research and Education on Aug. 24, 2022. Peters delivered remarks applauding the Coast Guard’s selection of Michigan to be home to the center and highlighting the critical role it will play in protecting the Great Lakes for future generations. Following the speaking program and ribbon-cutting ceremony, Peters toured the facility with Director of the Center for Freshwater Research and Education Dr. Ashley Moerke and U.S. Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander Kit Pace. Bay Mills Community College (BMCC) premedical students who transfer to Lake Superior State University (LSSU) will have an enhanced opportunity for early admission to the MSU College of Human Medicine under an agreement signed Wednesday.

MSU College of Human Medicine associate director for the Leadership in Rural Medicine Certificate Program, Elizabeth Lyons, EdD, and community assistant dean for the college’s Upper Peninsula Community Campus, Stuart Johnson, DO, were joined by Bay Mills Community College President and CEO Duane A. Bedell as well as Steve Johnson, PhD, Dean of the Lake Superior State University College of Science and the Environment, for the signing ceremony. The event included an opening smudge/prayer in the Anishnaabemowin language to help mark the collaboration by Michele Wellman-Teeple, Anishinaabemowin Pane Immersion Program faculty and director at Bay Mills Community College. The Lake Superior State volleyball team (1-3) split their matches on the final day of the Northern Michigan Open with a 3-0 sweep of the Minnesota-Crookston Golden Eagles (0-3) and a competitive 2-3 loss to the Bemidji State Beavers (1-2) on Saturday. Read more.

The Lake Superior State Ice Hockey program has named Louis Boudon as the team's captain for the 2022-23 season while Jacob Bengtsson and Jack Jeffers will serve as alternate captains, as announced by head coach Damon Whitten on Friday August 19, 2022. Read more.
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and FloSports today announced a record-setting media rights partnership establishing the partnership as the largest NCAA Division II rights deal to date. FloSports will become the exclusive streaming platform for the GLIAC and will broadcast over 900 games annually across 21 conference sports including football, basketball, softball, lacrosse, volleyball and more. The conference hosts some of the best collegiate sports programs in the country including Ferris State University and Grand Valley State University with the #1 and #5 NCAA Division II Football teams respectively. The four-year partnership that runs through the 2026 season is scheduled to begin on August 25, 2022, with the defending GLIAC champion Parkside men's soccer team facing off against Quincy in nonconference action.
